Update on my mom:
Took her to a follow-up appointment with the orthopedic surgeon today. Been about a month since her accident. Good news, bad news. Bad news, the broken piece of bone isn't healing the way they would like and it's not laying flat like it was after last x-ray. Doctor thinks all this is because of her severe osteoporosis. Good news, he still doesn't think she will need surgery.

He also thinks she may be able to draw Disability income because of the advanced osteoporosis. Told her to get the paperwork from Social Services and he would sign it. That's a long, uphill battle, but at least there is hope. He wanted her to take another month off of work, but she told him she can't. I took care of everything financially that I could and thank God my half brother stepped up and paid her lot rent for February.

Thanks for all the prayers - they are appreciated very much.

It will likely take three tries to get approved for disability, so be prepared for a long haul. I went through this process with my mom, and was very frustrated that she kept getting denied, even with 5 years of doctors' testing and diagnoses behind her. An acquaintance who works for SS said it's SOP to deny twice, then seriously consider the case. You can short circuit that process by starting out with a disability lawyer behind you, but that can cost dearly (my uncle, and Desert Storm vet who also has MS went this route, and it was a quick but spendy process). Get every bit of medical history in line (diagnosed osteoporosis should help, especially if it's been a while) and whoever you can get to back up the initial doctor's diagnoses. They have to be willing to say that she truly cannot work. You can do this.

(I agree, ma'am. Sometimes you can't afford NOT to get a disability lawyer. If it takes 2-3 years to qualify you lose all those benefits. With the lawyer it can happen as soon as three months and I think you get back benefits starting from when you applied and the lawyer will take the back pay as payment.)

Some will take the back, some want payment aside from that. It's worth shopping around. When we started the process, I had no idea what was involved and was just too stubborn to give up. I'd still like to see her get SSI (non-taxable), but that's nearly impossible unless you fit a certain, narrow profile.

I haven't updated in a long time, but I'm doing much better physically than I was 3-4 months ago. Much much better. And a large part of that is because of all your kind words, messages, et cetera. Round 1 of treatments has been over for a couple of weeks now, and my hair is thickening again (never fully lost it because I kept a cold cap on my head -- yes, it actually worked!) and my spirits are much higher. For a long time I was pretty deep in depression, and was on various types of painkillers that were changed seemingly all the time, but never wanted to bring my bad gunky here on SKMB. But I was low. Luckily, I'm better. I'm lucky.

I'm not completely out of the woods, but I feel a million times better now than I did. Thanks again, all. :cheerful:
