My friend and I are going to do the SK tour in Maine and we are planning our trip. Flying into Boston and driving up. Where should we stay? What else should we do?
misery chastain loves co. - she also could help as she is from that area.

Have fun and post pics from your trip please.

We are from Illinois, big fans! We've been friends since Kindergarten and never taken a trip together but when we thought about planning one, going to "Derry" was a no-brainer. The tour is the main focal point of the trip but we fly into Boston and will drive up route 1. We'd like to see some sights. We can keep busy in Boston, but what can we do between Boston and Bangor?

If you are renting a car you could swing through the Lisbon area and see the sites of 11/22/63 and also Durham is right close by and you could swing by Run Around Pond ( The Dead Zone)and the Shiloh church:)
Ps.....If you go by the Moxie store---- if you get there by way of Topsham you will also pass Crafts Car lot.
( continue on past Moxie store and you will eventually come to the school and some other briefly mentioned spots)
It is not much out of the way if you take the highway. You can also get there from route one but it would take you longer.Be sure to have your camera ready as you pass through towns and see all the familiar names so you can snap ypurself some pictures of the signs!

Just be aware that taking Route 1 all the way up will probably take you over 6 hours whereas the interstate will take 2-1/2. There is some beautiful scenery, but Ogunquit and Camden are the only SK-related spots that I can think of off the top of my head that would be along that route. Camden is where Thinner was filmed. Stacy had some good suggestions. The 11/22/63 sites she mentions include Worumbo Mills directly across from Kennebec Fruit in Lisbon Falls.

Thank you those are great tips. I saw Ogunquit on the map and made the assumption that it was on the 2 1/2 hour route. 11/22/63 is a favorite so I will want to make a side trip to Lisbon Falls. Anything else to do in Bangor? We're really stoked about the tour.

It would be a side trip off I-95 (the shorter route) so you could do that and then get back onto I-95/295 to continue on to Bangor. If you take the SK Tour with Stu Tinker, you'll see all the SK sites. The downtown area is seeing a revival and there are a lot of unique shops and a number of restaurants including a few ethnic choices. There's a casino with slots and table games if you're into that. If you're into historical sites, across the Penobscot River is Brewer, Maine which was the location of the birthplace and childhood home of Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain and the site of The Holyoke House an underground railroad house (unfortunately, that was torn down). Perhaps a look through the Bangor Visitors Center site would be helpful--here's the link.

...and there's this nifty little campground on the shores of a beautiful lake, that will never be the same following the Hossnpepper/GNTLGNT occupation of a coupla years ago...I think the pie stains are still drying in the community hall....
