Every once in a while I pick up a $5 movie that looks creepy and it turns out halfway decent. However most of the time these movies have such bad acting and terrible stories that they turn into comedies. I thought this one was alright but I am using it as an example.

Has anyone come across anything like this they would suggest watching? Any old/hidden horror films that turned out to be great?

Anything with Christopher Lee Bela lugosi in it. They were made by hammer c60-80's(not sure if they closed down), they were scary, but so obvious blood was ketchup. but i used to watch them every friday night. They were once very popular, wth the advent of special effects etc you may not like them, but they were fun

Believe it or not, I have never seen either of those films. i think John Wyndham wrote - village of the damned. Would netflix have it or is it too old. Do I have to pay a visit to amazon.
I think it was based on one of his books - the Midwich Cuckoos maybe? (Where a fog descends on a village and all the women of childbearing age become pregnant). Then the children are all born with golden eyes and the power to control their caregivers?

It was a long time ago that we read it in high school.

My favourite of his is "The Chrysalids" - I wish we had those telekinetic powers as it would make lack of communication a lot more rare.

Older than most, not as old as some.

Carnival of Souls. One of the creepiest, gets-under-your-skin, creeps-into-every-recess-of-your-mind movie ever made. The acting is questionable and it was probably filmed on a negative budget, but for sheer imagery and atmosphere, it can't be beat.

This was filmed here in Utah! That building on the front is Saltair. Right by the Great Salt Lake. I watched it a while back and it was pretty creepy for an old movie.

Carnival of Souls is my favorite B-movie. It's almost done well enough to escape the "B" category, imho.

A horror flick that came out a few years back that I really liked was Drag Me to Hell. I normally don't like horror films, but I loved that one. It went largely unnoticed when it came out and it's probably sitting in those DVD discount bins you see at retail stores.

Agreed! I really enjoyed that one and recommend it to anyone. Good story, good shots throughout.

Years ago...as kids...we went to see Dark Shadows at The Lode in Houghton...before it was sub-divided and now closed altogether...an insurance business is inside now though they still have the marquee. Which is a kind of horror, come to think about it. Fifteen minutes could save you $! Actually, maybe it was called House of Dark Shadows:

There was a line down Shelden Avenue three four blocks long...but I think we got a seat together, a cousin, sisters, me, possibly one or two others. The final scene in this movie...I can still see it...blues and reds. They had a soap opera on TV at the time...we'd watch it waiting for werewolf...and he'd come on during the final ten seconds, usually a shot of his hand turning hairy, his claws clutching the sheets...tune in tomorrow! same Bat time! same Bat channel!
