Have to say I don't like Goodfellas (movie or pizza! :D). It's weird, because I feel like I should. It's got actors in it that I like and they give generally good performances, and Joe Pesci's little speech is brilliant (moreso for being largely improvised, iirc?). But something about it just leaves me cold. Same with Reservoir Dogs.
Maybe the old "Stick yer hands up, yer bum" (comma optional ;)) stuff just isn't my cuppa.
(As a guy...does this make me the Minority Report? :smile2:)

Ohhhh! I love Reservoir Dogs too! We could not watch movies together!!!

I know just where you're coming from. It depends for me though, usually depending on the actors. I adore De Niro's gangster persona, so whenever it appears I enjoy it no matter. Pesci is so captivating, no matter the role, that he could speak pure Italian and I wouldn't care.

But subject matter and other factors help determine my interest in a movie project and unless the story picks me up quickly and carries me off, if it's about punks or gangsters or other examples of leeches on society, I personally tend to find it uninteresting.

I think like anything, there are exceptions.... and I think it all goes to our dealings with the opposite sex throughout our lives and how we process those experiences... I don't feel a need to have "girl stuff" just between me and my "girlfriends", never have. But there are a lot of stereotypes I really don't fall into - and I'm sure we can all find instances where we feel that we don't fall into them as well...

I don't think men are always at fault or a scapegoat ... I would have made the same comment about women if a woman wrote that ... "Mean really don't get Steel Magnolias" ... that's just silly!
When I speak to the term "American scapegoat" I don't mean only American men, I mean that the traditional American way of life has been vilified for decades, to the point that we ourselves are unduly ashamed.

There is a huge difference between "getting" something or liking it..... Mr. Smith came very close to crossing the line by almost implying that women don't understand the movie..... I understand many things perfectly well.....I don't like many things, either.
I didn't like Steel Magnolias.....felt like it was designed as an emotional basketcase tearjerker kind of film.....but I understood it just fine. Women are capable of enjoying movies other than tear jerkers and romance stories......

I would watch Steel Magnolias and inevitably enjoy it because almost all movies, coming out of Hollywood even, are actual stories, and if you're lucky you get wonderful actors like Sally Field in them. It's about marketing whether it appeals to this person or that group.

Anyway, whenever anybody says something starting with "women don't" I automatically know the speaker is full of sh!t. I don't - can't - listen further.

Maybe that's his problem (one of at least a couple, it seems)?
It seems that, in his world, if you understand the film it means you must like it...and conversely, if you don't like it it's because you've not understood the thing either in its entirety or in its nuances. Which is condescending, smug/arrogant self-superior BS whichever way you slice it.

Hated Steel Magnolias.
