For affect vs. effect, I have a system that works for me, though it might be a result of my chronic overthinking things. Affect is a verb, effect is a noun. Look at the alphabet as a circle, with Z being next to A. A for Affect is closer to V for Verb, E for Effect is closer to N for Noun. Works for me anyway.

I called my mom wouldn't be capitalized, I called Mom would be.

Alright isn't a word, except maybe in dialogue.

I need to check the oatmeal sight mentioned previously. Lie vs lay gives me trouble.

Your welcome should be you're welcome.

If you're a writer, running your stories through a crit group or a proof reader will help catch most mistakes before a prospective agent or editor can toss your submission due to poor grammar.

Lie vs lay gives me trouble.

This is a little cumbersome, but: Lay is the past tense of lie. I was tired. I lay down.

Or it's a transitive verb, i.e., takes an object. I will lay the pen down. (This also works with "lay" in the sexual sense.)

If English was simpler, we could have simpler mnemonic devices (or perhaps not even need them). But then we wouldn't have the rich array of expressions to choose from.
