OMG -you read my mind!! I was picking up my son from his Krav Maga class (at the Y), and I had already been to and come back from my Wed Zumba class (at the Y), and while I was waiting for him I was thinking - This is the best $76 I spend all month. I workout 4-5 days a week. My husband goes 5 days a week. My son is there 3 days a week. And my daughter loves to hang out with her friends in the kids room while I work out. Plus we go to the pool almost every day after work all summer. I love my Y membership.

My Catholic mom felt the YMCA was anti-Catholic. Not sure why. I used to swim there. A good deal.

Took a self-defense class there. Another good deal.

Up in the mountains, stayed at their place one time. Wasn't so hot, and they tried to double-bill me. At administrative snafu, I'm sure, but it wasn't such a good deal.

Two outta three, except I never joined.

Back in the day parents assumed there were certain things that were good to do for their kids, one of which was apparently to enroll their sons into a "Y". I remember never wanting to be there in the first place, and hating, dreading going there. I liked swimming (or whatever it was I did) in a swimming pool. But the pool at the Y wasn't like a regular pool. It was like a huge disciplinary device with rules designed to get you in trouble, and it had the potential for killing you. None of my regular friends were there and I didn't want to get to know any of the slimy, new wet ones, anyhow. It just wasn't for me; though I was a good boy and made it through my swimming course, and pretended everything was ok because that's what my mom wanted. I tried to let it be another learning experience.
