According to the Pope, there is no hell and Adam and Eve is a fable. Way to go Padre! I hated other Christians trying to put restrictions or limitations on my personal faith. My belief in God is mine and nobody elses. This pope is acting more like a Christian than any Pope I have heard about.

The Bible is a beautiful holy book, but like all great and ancient works, some passages are outdated. Some even call for intolerance or judgement.

The time has come to see these verses as later interpolations, contrary to the message of love and truth, which otherwise radiates through scripture.

In accordance with our new understanding, we will begin to ordain women as cardinals, bishops and priests. In the future, it is my hope that we will have a woman pope one day. Let no door be closed to women that is open to men!”

Do my eyes deceive me? Wow - the Catholic church is starting to grow up - way to go, Pope Francis!

Perhaps this is a first tiny baby step in acknowledging the scientific fact of evolution.

Biology was one of my favorite subjects in college. We do not need the whole Adam and Eve thing to believe in the perfection of the Universe...the magic of it. Reading about the sybiotic relationship between living things always made me closer to God.

    I love Papa Francisco!
I think all Catholics have learned (if you've been in faith formation at all since leaving school or PRE) that those first books of the bible are our "creation stories". All of them are similar in all cultures and religions, they were spread through the generations by word of mouth and drawings on cave walls - we simply don't know where or how we came to be. As far as changing Catholic doctrine, I don't know if he's interested in that - probably not. But he's definitely showing us what is important in life and that the true message of Jesus was one of love, compassion, service, forgiveness, kindness - all the virtues - not so much about following rules to perfection and righteousness. Pope Francis is showing us how to be the hands and feet of Christ.

He still believes the basic beliefs of the Catholic church, but he is compassionate and I like that he wants everyone to be treated with kindness and understanding no matter what.

It's about time someone removed Dante's Divine Comedy from the books of the Bible.

I heard he is also calling for some vanilla or cinnamon flavoring added to the communion wafers. It's a brave new world...

I see you're from OKC. I lived most of my life in and around Tulsa. You aren't saying you don't know that there are MANY literalists when it comes to the bible are you? You should be able to throw a feather out your window and hit 12 or so without too much effort...

I like that word "literalists" - never heard it before, but yes - those folks, they're all over my part of the planet.

The first small town I grew up in had, no joking 78 churches in it. For a town of about 6000. SEVENTY EIGHT. All of them a christian denomination. I don't think people, even here in the south, truly understand how over the top religious people are in OK. That is one of the main reasons I left. Just couldn't take the fake judgmental hypocrisy anymore. And what's funny is anytime you say that, there is always areligious sort who jumps up and says "well you can't say all christians are like that". Maybe not, but I cut through a pretty good swath of them for decades of my life and nothing has ever shown that not to be the case, generally speaking. Many of these same people are the 6000 year old earth crowd...

Well, I may have made it up, but I use it frequently to describe the 6000 year old snake handling crowd...

May I ask from where you hail? And also, just HOW was that breakfast at Tiffany's?
