Happy hump day.

Has anyone ever been on a MB where hellbanning was used?

How did you know/figure out is was being used?

Peace.

I don't know if any site I've been on has used it. None has advertised that it was a possible consequence. And, I guess if it happened to someone we'd just think they stopped posting, right? They could post 100 times a day, but none of it would show up?

I was going to ask why an admin wouldn't just "regularban" someone, but then they would be mad and try to sign back in as someone else, or find some other way around. This way they'd just assume no one was willing to play ball and get bored and move on, is that why?

Hey, you!

Yes Ma'am. That's the theory anyway.

Peace.

It's done here in *extinction*. People do not reply to or 'Like' the post. Either consciously or subconsciously the person picks up the non-response. They will then either modify their behavior or leave or stop posting.

Peace.

That 'extinction' really means nothing if an abuser's words are still being seen. Isn't that how a troll gets off? It doesn't matter if they get likes.... it's the idea that they flamed someone publicly and everyone else on the boards gets to witness the 'humiliation'. A troll doesn't even really care if they're 'liked' or befriended.... they're in it for their own selfish satisfaction, it makes them feel important when if in fact, if they saw themselves and their actions through the mirror of the community, they'd realize that they're sad and f'ing pathetic. How brave is it to be an utter Do*ch*bag when you're hiding behind a screen-name.... why should any site reward them for it?

How very, very true.

I must insert a voice of conscience here.

It's so tempting to do that, and it just seems so just, to give the $h!t-stirrer, the annoying haranguer, his comeuppance.

But it's cruel. And if you want to take the high road, if you want to be better than the people you're resenting, it doesn't really call for cruelty. Just ban them outright. Make it clean, make it straightforward.

I did participate on a board that did hellbanning. And there was one guy there who, while the mods apparently considered him a troll, considered himself simply fiercely independent. He argued a lot, and yeah, he was annoying. He got the hellban. Apparently he posted and posted until he figured out what was wrong, then came back in another persona, said, "Well, I hope you've had your fun. I spent a lot of time and energy sending my thoughts to nowhere. That was meaner than I'd ever be. I thought I was with accepting people, but now I know better," and if it was simply manipulation, it worked on me, because I felt bad for him.

You don't go wrong by taking the high road. If someone is bannable, then just ban them.

On one hand, it would be a mean thing to do, but on the other hand there are some people who post online who seem to just want to get under people's skin. The best thing you can do is ignore them. What's great about this mod tool is that it forces everyone to ignore the person being banned.

I agree, LT.

And i don't need someone to be a voice of conscience for me. Because i HAVE one. And as someone who has been preyed upon by these self-absorbed bullies (for reasons anywhere between they didn't like my screen name because they think i worship the devil (i care NOT), they don't like the fact that i don't believe in god ( (i double care not), to the always appealing route for a bully... they didn't like that i was sticking up for someone else who was being bullied. (i ALWAYS care)), i've had quite enough of them having the right to be a jerk while someone else doesn't have the right to be protected.

Don't want to be hellbanned? Then don't be a bully. Take offense to me, my screen name or my opinion on here? Then i guess you can block me.
