Hi everyone!
I started reading Mr. King's books after Salem's Lot was published. I've read most of his books since then, though not all of them because they seem to come out too fast. I always wondered something. Most people, including myself, thinks that The Stand is his greatest book, and one of THE best books ever written. Does it bother him that a lot of his books get compared to The Stand? Does he think he can ever outdo The Stand in most people's minds, or does he even want to? Just wondering.

My opinion of his best changes from time to time, but The Stand is always top three.

As for how he feels about it, I like to think he's in the same boat as Van Morrison regarding Brown Eyed Girl (paraphrase, I can't find the quote): "It's depressing for so many people to think your best work was 30 years ago."

Welcome vmi. For me, the best of his books are the Dark Tower novels. I feel they define his writing the most. The Stand was a great book, though.

He's said in several interviews -- in a semi-joking way -- it's sort of depressing that the book most people consider his "best" came out over thirty years ago. I think that might even be in the introduction to the expanded edition.... Can't remember though.

Welcome!

Hi there - sorry I missed your first post - I recall being quite sick on May the 8th! (Went to the doctors for a sick note).

Welcome to the SKMB
