I've heard a lot of similar complaints about "The Gunslinger."

I'd suggest instead of slogging through, you pack it all up and put it away for 30 or so years. Then when there is no new SK material coming out you'll have a whole new epic adventure to enjoy. You won't regret it.

(Hey, someone needs to play the devil's advocate, right? :))

This is very nearly what I did - I gave it a try in 1987/88 - somewhere thereabouts. Put it away (wish I could remember where!) and tried it again when I'd read everything else - around 2012 and then I spent 2 years reading the entire series. It's what led me to the SKMB - I needed someone to talk DT with.

:grinning:

I Calla-Speak. And get weird looks.
I told someone in the office last week: "May it do ya fine". Calla-Speak slip ups all the time. It's just such a lovely intimate way of speaking. Like a hug without touching. I love Calla-Speak.

You can set your watch and warrant on that.

I kept a map tucked in the book with me while reading. Maybe this will help our OP, Kaity.

Not fancy, but did the trick.

Push through. Not only will you reach the end eventually, you'll recall the ups and downs of the journey for years to come. Some of the books I hold dear were based on the decision to commit when it would have been easier to fold tent. Smooth books are great. But books with some roughage are worthwhile.

Thanks so much everyone, I am going to stick it out!!!! :)<3
I was the same way. I thought the 2nd half of gunslinger was better than the first. Book leaves a lot of questions. View it as the first few chapters of a long book. I have read 3 of them and half way done with part 4 and so far dt 2 has been my favorite. Not really a spoiler here but goes from Western to new York City so by all means keep going
