Also I guess, if you receive information that would refute heretofore knowledge of something, opening your mind up to it just a little bit, couldn't possibly hurt?

Is this even English? I've been reading at a university level since I was like 8 years old and this strange group of sentence fragments has me flummoxed.

Well it's a damn shame that many of the immature people who are in the habit of "misunderstanding" things (read: picking fights and starting fights where none existed before) and getting butthurt are also moderators. Lamentably, I see that this site is no different. Gotta say, I am not impressed. It's a shame too because I'm a smart and knowledgeable guy. From a class I took years ago on Fascism and Communism (I got an A), one thing the instructor said which has always stuck with me: true believers have no sense of humor and the absolute inability to see things any other way.
The misunderstanding is yours sir, and I was hoping you would try again.. to be polite. You think very highly of yourself and in the process you put down people you do not even know. I do hope you try again.

I am getting the distinct impression that nobody here is as interested in having polite discussions as they are in maintaining their silly little pecking order and demanding nothing less than obsequiousness. I am getting the distinct impression that a few of you are quite crazy and immature. Not a "flame" or "trolling"; merely making an (admittedly unflattering) observation, I could be wrong after all*.

*lol not bloody likely

My point is that nobody who is called Stevie likes to be called Stevie, but them's the breaks. I will admit that I was indeed taunting the goof who dared to tell me what pet nicknames I am and am not allowed to use. That angers me as it would anger any right-thinking person. Thus far, I am the only person on this thread who has been outright insulted by repeatedly being told not to "fight" when I haven't been throwing punches. When I throw a punch - verbal or otherwise - you will know it. Maybe you really are only 11 years old after all. Precocious but far from wise to the ways of the world.

I have understood your point regarding the liking (or not) of Steve/or Stevie, message received.
Thank you for accepting your part in this, (re: the taunting) I do agree with you that GNTL's original "Uncle Stevie" comment to you was unnecessary, which is why in my original comment, I had quoted both his and your post; with a request:
We can probably just let this go now. :)
...this was done in an attempt to diffuse a situation before it escalated.

As to you being the only person "on this thread who has been outright insulted", you insulted GNTL (called him "crazy") in your reply to him, which I removed before approving. There have been other insults, I am sure everybody here can plainly see.

Not too much to say to this, there are misunderstandings... and then there are out-of-proportion rants.

Is this even English? I've been reading at a university level since I was like 8 years old and this strange group of sentence fragments has me flummoxed.

More insults really, but I don't profess to be a scholar.

I have tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, initially I commented on GNTL's post to you and your reply to him and tried to give you back-ground on where the name/s came from, this is all.
Everything that has come after that has been a direct result from the attitude you are displaying. If you look around the MB, we just don't really treat each other in the same way that a lot of other sites seem to do.
Several times you have been offered an olive branch in the hope that we can get back to 'business as usual'. It's up to you.

Personal insults however are not tolerated, messages will be edited/deleted and infractions handed out in cases where MB terms and rules are not followed.

He may be a Stevie in your mind but I’ve had the honor of knowing him for 29 years and never once have I addressed him as Stevie nor have I heard anyone who knows him personally refer to him as anything other than Stephen or Steve.

I’ve had a chance to read through this entire thread. I think there were misunderstandings on both sides that got things off on the wrong foot. I don’t believe GNTLGNT’s message was anything other than well-intended. Although you are correct, Erudite Scholar, that Steve has used the term "Uncle Stevie" publicly so I can understand why you would not think it was off-limits, your response to Scott was harsher than it need be and your subsequent responses have set a tone and attitude that is not acceptable particularly to moderator FlakeNoir. In spite of a number of welcomes by members and attempts to give you the benefit of the doubt and opportunity to go forward on a more positive note, you chose to be argumentative and condescending. You’ve been given a formal warning for being disrespectful to a moderator.

As Flake pointed out, there have been others who started out on shaky ground but were able to turn things around and engage in civil discussions and become welcome contributors to the Message Board community. We are willing to give you that opportunity as well but if there are any posts that continue with the tone and attitude of your latter posts, then this is probably not the right site for you to be on and a Ban will be put in place.

Wow. You leave town for a few days....

I was unaware of the background of "Uncle Stevie", I was under the impression it was what he called himself in reference to the Constant Reader, a wink-wink kind of thing. I thank GNTLGNT, FlakeNoir and Moderator for clearing that up. I did not use the phrase often, but I did use it. I will not do that anymore. I would hate to be disrespectful at all, even unknowingly.

I'm old-school, I guess--I can't even use his first name (in any form) familiarly--lol. Darn me old mam for teaching me respectful address. ;) I don't know the man personally, as much as I admire him. "Mr. King" it is :)

Oh, yes. Absolutely. If I ever have the chance to meet him, it will be Mr. King for me. I only ever used Uncle Steve a few times, and it felt weird. But I thought he had coined it, so was giving permission, in a way. When talking about him here at home or whatever, I always say Stephen King.

I feel bad for ever using it now, knowing that he dislikes it!

He may have softened toward it since he first said he didn't like it. It does seem strange that he'd start using it in reference to himself but it definitely is only a form of address he uses for fans, not friends or family.

No more 'Uncle Stevie' from me, either. I didn't know the complete story until now, as the only other place I've seen it was when it came directly from Stephen in an interview years ago. I'm pretty sure I've used it a couple of times in the years I've been a member here, but it was never meant in a disrespectful way. I used it more as a somewhat intimate term, like I was referring to an old friend.

I do hope that somebody passes along to Stephen that nobody means any disrespect by using it and that in a way, it is indeed an honor. Even if it truly annoys him. Over the years, women I was sleeping with have had pet names for me. To date, I haven't cared for a single one of them (the names, not the women). But did that stop me from shtupping them (the women, that is)?

But I'm not going to lie and say that I don't think fans making a big show of defending the honor of their favorite writer isn't more than a little silly.
