I was a complete idiot. I had several things planned to say, one of which was how much he physically resembles my late father (gone 25 years now), who was coincidentally a preacher. After I asked to shake his hand, I managed to tearfully blurt out, "You look so much like my late father!" But he had already moved on and was signing the next book, so he didn't look up, but chuckled awkwardly. One of the handlers immediately and pointedly said, "THANK YOU FOR COMING!". It was all very awkward and weird, I felt like they all thought I was nuts or something. I could imagine yelling, "But I'm your biggest fan!!!" as they drag me out. ;-)

They had handlers? :biggrin2::wack:

Welcome to the SKMB and please disregard what it says under my avatar! (it's really a joke) :shh:

I guess that's what you would call them. They were definitely there to shuffle people along when their time was up. My experience was a bit reminiscent of the scene from The Christmas Story, where Ralphie is desperately trying to get out his request to Santa, but goes blank until he's getting shuffled along (pushed down the slide) and then he suddenly blurts it out. But hey, I shook Stephen King's hand and managed not to have a heart attack or begin sobbing uncontrollably, so that's good enough for me.
