Sooo.....by odd turns of coincidence, I found myself called to start writing. I've never been a fan of Mr. King...truth be told....his stories scare me. I saw Misery and parts of The Stand, aside from that the only Stephen King book I've read is On Writing. I picked it up by chance and read it in one sitting. It was as if I'd sat down with my late father and discussed a dream of writing and plotted out a path toward that end. Rather than scare me away from exploring myself as a storyteller, Mr. King confirmed what I already imagined writing could be for me.

I am very biased .. lol I love all his work. However, if you like big fat books, IT is my favorite. The Stand is another great one. Some would say if you want to experience his growth, start from the beginning in the order of publishing dates. You will not regret reading his works.. he is a very deep writer, masterful storyteller and wonderful character builder. You will indeed be 'there' .

Welcome to the SKMB! :) Nice to have you here. Stephen King has lots of stories that aren't horror. I think there are several you could really enjoy and not be scared. He tells stories in a way that can't be beat, in my opinion. Maybe you would like 11/22/63...? That is one that has been very well liked by many and is not horror. :)

Hi & Welcome!

"Joyland" is an excellent read that's got a bit of a spooky story to it, but I wouldn't consider it 'horror'. The Detective Hodges trilogy ("Mr. Mercedes" and "Finders Keepers" - "End of Watch" is coming next year, I think) is also very well written and (so far) not supernatural.

Try reading The Eyes of the Dragon - I think you might like that one!

Another one that is not too scary would be "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"

or even 11/22/63 - one of the best!
