Dear Mr.King

My name is Juan.R. I am a 8th grade student at Lara academy which is located in Chicago Illinois. I am writing to you because I really admire your stories and because I am doing a school project.

I have researched you and found out that you were born in Maine. Being so close to Canada’s border did you visit Canada often growing up? I have never gone to Canada but I have friends there and they tell me it’s a nice place. I have also found out that you sometimes live in Florida. Florida has many sinkholes are you afraid that one of them will collapse under your home? I have also never been to Florida but my best friend used to live in Miami Florida. He said that Miami is great but not as good as Chicago. Have you ever been to Chicago? If not when will you visit?

Now I have currently read two of your masterpieces Just after Sunset and Christine. Also I am in the middle of Wizard and Glass the Dark Tower volume four. Out of the three I have read so far I think Christine was so far the best. I think Christine really hooked me in because I can relate some of the events that happen in the story to my life. For example I am on my way to High school so I am starting to drift away from my current friends so kind of what happened to Dennis and Arnie in Christine how after Arnie bought Christine the relationship between he and Dennis was getting cut off.

Now I want to ask you some questions that I think are special so please answer.First Do the events that occur in your life help inspire you to make your stories. I asked this one because some of the things that happen in your books are mindblowing and I ask how did you come up with this. Next Why do almost all of your novels focus on the genre of Horror/Suspense/Mystery?Lastly are you planning on writing any books in the future with a different genre than Horror/Suspense/Mystery? If have reached this far into my letter I want to thank you for reading my letter and hope that you respond. I read almost any type of your writing so a letter from you should no different and again thank you.

Hi Juan welcome to the site, it's great to have you here. :)

What a fantastic letter! Unfortunately Stephen doesn't really have a lot of spare time to read the messages here, but perhaps the moderators can answer some of your questions?

Where Stephen's ideas come from:
"I get my ideas from everywhere. But what all of my ideas boil down to is seeing maybe one thing, but in a lot of cases it's seeing two things and having them come together in some new and interesting way, and then adding the question 'What if?' 'What if' is always the key question."

Why do almost all of your novels focus on the genre of Horror/Suspense/Mystery?
I think I remember reading at some point that a lot of Stephen's work is based around this genre because this is largely what he enjoyed reading himself as a child/younger person, so naturally his imagination gravitated toward this as he found his own writing voice.

As to whether he has visited Canada or Chicago (I am guessing 'yes' but...) I will leave that to Ms. Mod to answer. (She is away until the 13th, but I will leave an alert for her.)

This is an excellent first post. For an 8th grader you are very well spoken and refreshingly polite. A few adults could learn from you!

Welcome Juan!

To the best of my knowledge, Stephen didn't do a lot of visits to Canada as a child even though it is relatively close depending upon where in Maine you live. He has been to Chicago both for business and pleasure (his daughter lived there for a few years). I think those were the only questions unanswered but if I missed any, let me know.

...couldn't he have just gotten to the East Quoddy Lighthouse and dogpaddled from there?.....
