Last night I told the audience about the first time I quit writing forever. I addressed a packed house, explaining that during my time of self-imposed literary exile (circa 2009) a friend who knew better than I did loaned me her copy of "On Writing". My friend understood how influential Mr. King's work was to me, and that I'd become impossible to live with having vowed to give up something I was, apparently, born to do. Well, I wasn't going to write ever, ever, ever again. But I would certainly read the book.

Still holding firm to my belief that I would never set pen to paper for the rest of my life, I came upon page 170. Wherein lurked the Dick and Jane exercise. A writer's prompt, if you will, from Mister King himself.

Resistance was futile.

The above-mentioned audience was there to see my short play, "High Maintenance," Mr. King's exercise brought to life. Was it one of those inexplicable surreal moments? Oh, yeah. And as per his book, I am dropping a line to say how the exercise went for me.

Pretty damn good.

In the last seven years I've had a very large production, and some very small productions, hit the stage. But none so close and dear to me as this one. The experiences I've had, the people I've met, and the memories I will always cherish are directly attributable to page 170.

I just wanted to say thank you.

P.S. The audience loved it. :encouragement:

Thank you so much everybody. And now that I've figured out how to resize pictures, I can share this one of my cast and director. This was at our meet and greet a few weeks ago. Our director is holding the book, although I don't think she knew (at the time) why I asked her to hold it. :biggrin2:

Welcome to the Board and thank you for sharing your story, both this one and "High Maintenance." I'm glad you were inspired by On Writing to pick up your craft once again and that it turned out to be such a success for you.

Hi, Ms. Mod. You were kind enough to respond to this Post, and, as my perseverance would have it, my crowd-funding campaign for High Maintenance launches tomorrow. I know it's a Forum No-No not to post any information about it, so of course I won't. (Although I seriously want to shout it from this particular cyber rooftop!) :) I figured this was okay, as I'm just (hopefully) replying to you.

Anyway, the suggestion to (and I'm paraphrasing from the On Writing book) 'drop me a line at stephenking.com and let me know how it goes' keeps plaguing my mind. Since there's really no way (at least not anymore) to actually "drop a line" at that site, I was wondering if you have any suggestions? How does one actually drop Mr. King a line? To let him know how it went? Because it went pretty great. So far, anyway.

Thanks for your time. And I'm sorry if I'm posting this question in the wrong place. I'm not really great at internetting.

I can send you the office address if you'd like to write but I can't guarantee he would ever read it as he gave up reading/responding to fan mail back in the '80s. He does visit the site (anonymously) but doesn't read every single post so possible he'd see it here and might even have a little more chance than through a letter sent to the office.

Does he ever post (anonymously)? :)

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. Knew. But, sure, if there's an address, that'd be great. :smile2: Thanks!

If he didn't log in he wouldn't be allowed to see many of the images, correct? Or does he have some special super secret access? :)
He'd have to log in to see profile pages but my understanding is that as a guest he could see the posts themselves. Don't remember if I've tried to do that without logging in first to see just how much you can access.
