Does anyone have an idea what the original retail price was?

John
Original price was $50 but if you pre-ordered it was dropped to $40 + shipping. It's a really nice book with lots of information on the series. I also have the one for Carrie which I found at Half Price Books for $6.98. That was a steal!

I shop for books at Amazon so I'll give you a couple price examples from there.

Using your example, I'm guessing the Dutch text editions go out of print quicker than the English text editions. IT (English text) hasnt gone out of print here BUT if you wanted to buy a new copy of the first printing in hardcover, it would cost $162.37.

The Colorado Kid is out of print - the cover price is $5.99 US. The cost of a new copy of the mass market paperback starts at $43.00 (used copies start at $6.45)

Tabitha King's Small World is also out of print. The cost of a new copy of the mass market paperback starts at $34.50. I don't know what the original cover price was - probably somewhere around $5.95.

Sorry, I don't know how to convert US dollars to euro.

Are you shure the Colorado kid is out of print? Ie the king novel the Colorado kid?

You reminded me how much I miss the brick 'n mortar stores. I used to live near the Northpark shopping mall in Dallas. There used to be three book stores in the mall. I went to Waldenbooks for magazines and sci-fi. I went to Barnes & Noble for everything else. I could happily browse in Barnes & Noble for hours and walk out with a stack of books. I never have figured out how to browse the web stores. I look at the lists and the recommendations and the reviews but I guess I need to hold a book and read the back cover and flip through the pages to know if I want to read it. I've been relying on the What Are You Reading thread here for reading suggestions. Barnes & Noble is still at the mall but since we moved to Podunkville, I never get there :(
I am the same way. I haven't read a hard back or paperback in years. I have a Kindle Fire or I listen to them with my phone but I browse Barnes and Noble for hours and I take pics of the books I like then buy from Amazon later

I don't remember where I got the idea The Colorado Kid is out of print so I'm not for absolutely sure but think it is. I had to order a used copy because I couldn't afford a new copy since the price had increased so much (after it went out of print?).

Thank you :) I think Joyland is also published by Hard Case Crime but I think it's still in print. I guess The Colorado Kid just didn't gain enough popularity for a second printing :(

I think the Hard Case Crime edition was a small run because at the time it was very much a small press operation. It has since been available as an e-book and PS Publishing is currently selling a hardcover edition illustrated by Dave McKean for £25 or a limited slip-cased edition signed by McKean for £195.

Half Price Books doesn't seem to do anything online, I only get error notices. It looks like a nice store.

One of our best bookstore chains was called 'De Slegte'. It disappeared mostly a couple of years ago unfortunately. There are only a couple of real stores left (two in the Netherlands and four in Belgium).

It had mostly really cheaply priced books, both new and used, in multiple languages and subjects. You could always have surprise finds there.

Basically the definition of supply and demand. Capitalism at its finest. Or like my grandpa used to say. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. A fool and his money will b seperated.

You'd think in this case though the ones about The Shining and Carrie would be more popular, as they're regarded as more classic than Salem's Lot.
Or maybe there were far less printed of Salem's Lot for that very reason, driving the prices up.

On the colorado kid. Few things, first it is out of print. Its also strange its pricey bc 1 mill copies were made. Usually to be pricey only 5000 or usually even lower number printed. The only thing i can think of is just 1 version is high. They made 3 versions or prints. A true FIRST edition and the only indicator is the numbers 50599 above the upc code. This one should b the only ONE that costs more. The other 3 should only b 10 bucks or less in my opinion. The only thing i cannot find out is they never gave the number of copies made for each version. It would b nice to know how many copies were made of the 50599 number. If we knew that we could get a accurate price for the book. If say for example 500 were made then the book could be in the hundreds or even more. But if 500k were made of the 1 mill of 50599 then should only cost 10 bucks or less. So basically were missing some very valuable info on what the book is worth. My advice would b if ur going to pay 40 to 60 bucks make sure at least ur getting the 1st edition 1st print with the numbers 50599 above the upc code. I have one but ive had it for years and years and dont remember what i paid. Anyways hope that info helped.
