I don’t claim a sharp memory of my first SK book or age reading it. It was either Carrie or The Shining and I was likely about 14. I do recall it being my mother who turned me on to King. Many years later my own son requested Christine as a bedtime story. We were in between Harry Potter releases and guess he saw that shiny car on the cover and it caught his attention. I told him it wasn’t a child’s bedtime story. But he insisted and I relented. I think we tried one or two chapters before I gave up, realizing I had to censor so much and the book was really not appropriate for a child who too young to read yet. So, I ended up telling him he had to wait until he could read it himself.

I’m kind of old school and not entirely comfortable with socializing online. My first foray into forums was about 10 years ago. You would think dog people would be super nice, wouldn’t you? Well, many of them are. But there was a lot of angry pettiness, too. Certain folks who used others’ misfortune to be self righteous rather than helpful or simply silent. Plus there was the occasional horror story of abuse bomb thrown in for good measure as well. After a few months, I became convinced I am too thinned skinned for forum dwelling. But I did learn a great deal and think I came away a better trained human for the experience. Nonetheless, I have refrained from forum participation for close to a decade.

When I finished the Dark Tower series, I was curious what others thought. I did find the SKMB back then and I considered joining. But since my son was still young enough to need rides to his various activities at that time, I did not think I had the time, energy or inclination to be able to engage or contribute in any meaningful way on a regular basis. So I sated my curiosity and read the forum responses as a lurker. There were quite a few unhappy readers. But some who felt the same as I did. I thought it was rather a brilliant way to complete the Tower.

So what draws me in August 2016? Well, I am now an empty nester with a little more time on my hands and recently picked up The Stand in audio book form. I am on disk 10 of 37 disks. Of course, I have the behemoth on my book shelf as well and have already had to pull it a couple of times. Somehow certain passages I can't quite grasp by listening and have to see in print. But I like the audio in that I can listen while driving to and from work. Revisiting The Stand caused me to rethink The Tower.

After a few days a lurkin' again at SKMB, I find it seems a bit more thoroughly and thoughtfully moderated than other forums I have observed. So I figure as a long time Constant Reader I might have some thoughts to share as well as glean further understanding and meaning from other readers/admirers of Mr. King's works.

Hi Pep's person and welcome! Nice introduction. I think it was a wise move stopping reading Christine to your son at the time you did. Now that you're an empty nester I was wondering if your son picked up the mantle and is a King fan as well? We are similar in our view of social media. I lurked for a while here and found the people to be quite civilized and humourous. There are always one or two certain threads that go angrily into the weeds from time to time but I feel these things cannot be avoided in any family. Picking up and moving on without the pettiness or grudges seems a normal process around here. I hope you glean some good info and feedback on this site, while offering your own insights. I have no insights, just opinions. I'm more of a goofy jester who is quick with a quip and walks the fine line between normalcy and absurdity. All the best, mal.

Thanks for the welcome and your question. I do not think he ever did get to Christine. I know he has been stuck on the path to The Tower for a few years now. As far as I know he hasn't finished running with the wolves yet. He mentioned picking it back up though, so we'll see.

I plan on staying away, far, far away, from the politics/religion threads
