What's on your list? We've got a postponed bathroom renovation (just waiting to see if Big Brother is going to make any job cuts before we dive in to savings for that). But what we really need to do is paint the back of the house. Anyone ever climbed one of those huge ladders and done it yourself? The back of the house needs it desperately and I'm not one to pay for something we can and should do ourselves - not ever. But we're both big chickens of climbing that ladder - we've got a 2 story, plus attic level to paint. I need someone to tell me how to do this. It can't be that hard.

It isn't very hard.....but working on tall ladders alone is scary and not safe. When I paint the outside of the house, I'm able to rent scaffolding from a local rent-all place.

Is it hard to build the scaffolding? I thought about doing that. It would be a joint project - the Ogre and I would take turns. I like to paint. It's almost Zen-like for me.

I am a painting freak. I was the only person I know who loves to paint--until now. I change the color of my house every 4 or 5 years and I think I'll be painting it this summer. But, I have a single story and even climbing up on the roof to get the gables. Two story, I would rent the contraption.

Bathroom pictures!

It's not that difficult to paint with a ladder. Just take your time and try not to paint too large an area at one time - reaching too far which is dangerous. Just keep moving the ladder - always a two person job for safety. I hate painting! My father grew up in the depression and always watered down our paint about 50% to "make it last." Unfortunately it took about 5 coats of that colored water to get the job done. He saved nothing, and my job took 2 - 3 times longer than it had to. I love aluminum siding. Greatest invention since sliced bread.

My spring project is digging down a foot or two to get more depth out of the above ground pool and then relining it.

My assumption is that it might be less expensive to rent it. Of course, if you make your own you keep it.

My house needs work at a variety of sites. My first priority is to waterproof the basement, which has needed it ever since the house was built in 1962. After that, roof shingles need to be replaced. After that, the kitchen needs to be remodeled. After that, the wood floors need to be sanded and varnished. After that, all indoor walls need to be painted.

Meanwhile, I have to find a job to pay for all the above. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying doing yard work (which, due to my new hip, I can finally do without becoming disabled with hip and back pain within five minutes).

Nah, it's pretty simple to put together. I prefer to rent the stuff because I don't want or need to store it.

I love to paint.....it is on my to do list for this year, but new windows and furnace are taking priority

My dad is actually a residential painter, he works with his brother and I help from time to time. It definitely helps not having much of a fear of heights. I've seen him go up crazy high, on the crazy long ladders.. He has never used any scaffold or anything for as far as I can remember. What I hate though is having to climb up high and get on a ROOF. Getting off is always the huge problem for me, getting the courage to swing your legs over the top of the ladder, hoping it doesn't slide even if someone is holding it.. Just being on some of those high high roofs make you feel a little weird, sometimes i'll wonder how in the heck I'm gonna get down lol.
You all be CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!

This is our house too - need wood floors, new tile, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, new windows. Or we can wait it out and sell it cheap in a few years - which I how I want to do it. I don't want to put all that money and time into it just to move because as soon as the last birdie leaves the nest, we're moving to the beach!
