I'm going to start my answer by telling you how NOT to clean oven racks (if you have a self-cleaning oven). DO NOT leave the racks in the oven when you run the clean cycle. The high temperature will make them dull and they will never slide in and out as smoothly as they did before. Sadly, I know this from experience (perhaps I should have read the directions first). So, whether you have an oven that self cleans or not, you will have to find a way to clean the racks. You can spray them with oven cleaner, but where do you do that? Not in the tub. And mine don't fit flat in my tub either....so, I bend over the tub, hold them upright, and scrub. This is a tedious and inefficient way of cleaning them. Needless to say, the inside of my oven is typically nice and clean and the racks....well, embarrasing.

Here is one I found:
Tip: Clean Oven Racks with Ammonia
To clean oven racks a lot easier, remove them from the oven and put them in a heavy duty garbage bag. Pour in 1 cup of ammonia and then tie the bag shut. Leave it outside overnight, and then scrub with hot soapy water. The grime will wipe right off.

Tip: Ammonia for Cleaning Oven Racks
When my oven racks get dirty or covered with spill-overs, this is what I do. Get a very sturdy thirteen gallon garbage bag, pour enough sudsy ammonia in it to cover the oven rack, lay on a flat surface (preferably outside for ventilation purposes), such as a half sheet of plywood or the picnic table, put the rack in the garbage bag, let sit overnight, remove the next morning.

You should be able to remove the grease and grime with a scrubber and very little effort. You can dilute the ammonia if you wish, but I would not dilute it any more than half water and half ammonia or the results won't be what you are needing.

If you feel that there is not enough of the ammonia covering the rack, you can very carefully turn the bag and rack over, but beware of poking holes in the bag with the oven rack.

Tip: Cleaning Oven Racks
To clean the racks in your oven, pour 1 cup ammonia into a trash bag, add the racks and seal for 24 hours. Use a nylon scrubbie to remove loose debris. Works great!

I'll start with a question.

How do you clean oven racks?

I do not have a self-clean oven. My racks do not fit flat in my tub.
Put them in a large lawn & leaf bag--the black plastic ones--with a bottle of ammonia & let them sit for a couple of hours. Then rinse them off & they're perfect. Works for burner pans, too.

OOPS--sorry, Spidey. I should read all the posts before I chime in :p

There are such things as... OVENS THAT CLEAN THEMSELVES?! *drool*

Haha! Yes, there are and I'd never had one until we bought our house 10 years ago and I got to buy appliances! My mom bought one a several years ago...she refuses to use the clean cycle because "it just doesn't get that dirty, so I wipe it out". Yup, kneeling on the floor, reaching inside, scrubbing away....she's 79. C'mon Mom, use the ding-dang clean cycle!

I have had REALLY good luck with Dirty Jobs laundry additive. I can only find it at Walmart, but it might be other places. Dirty Jobs™ - Get Tough on Your Dirtiest Jobs

It's the only thing that gets out oily stains, like when you blop ranch dressing on your shirt, or when a baby throws up formula on you. It's also really good on spaghetti and poop and blood, but most serious stain removers are. I'd just never found anything that worked on oil before. I swear, I could hear the angelic choir in the background when we first tried it! I wish I hadn't had 4 of my 5 kids BEFORE this product came out, I walked around for years with some pretty gothic barf stains...
