When man 1st sinned against God he was kicked out of Paradise and a great chasm separated him from all the other animals as a punishment. Most animals accepted the separation and actually felt safer because man was now to be a hunter of many of them. All but one animal. This animal watched in distress as the chasm grew wider and man receded into the distance. This animal circled anxiously and finally at the last possible moment made a desperate leap across the chasm with just its paws reaching the edge of the precipice. Man reached down and grabbed the paws of Dog and held him. Ever since that day dog has been man’s best friend. Perhaps God had a change of heart at the last moment and helped dog with his leap so man would have at least one devoted animal companion and also perhaps it was no accident that this animal’s name was the name of God spelled backwards.

Pehaps you have a good dog story. Why not share it on this thread. :)

I don't know a good story about dogs, but I do have one about how loudly... and frequently 6 or 7 of them bark in a fenced in kennel about 30 feet from my bedroom window. Sorry. Not lovin' on dogs just now.

Dogs are not good in packs. It's always one dog barking at something and all the other dogs barking at the barking dog. :(

Seriously not meaning to rain on the dog parade but the part about this being adapted from several Indian tales caught my eye as I suspect neither the Indians with the feather nor the ones with the dot would spell it God in order to be able to spell it dog. I know, there's one in every crowd and based on all the folks who come here to complain about Steve's bloopers, I should probably hit the delete button rather than the Post Reply button. Before doing that, though, I do want to say I enjoy the sentiment of the story itself so throwing caution to the wind and hitting Post Reply.

Yup. They take turns barking at each other, out of boredom, or some critter that walks by. And it never stops. Day and night. For awhile, I thought it might be the dog on the other side of the guy... he got a pit bull that kicks up a fuss. But that one just adds to the fray. It's the lot of them. And I'm tired of listening to them.

This was what I found re the parable. It does not include anything about the spelling connection of God/ dog.

How dogs became man’s best friend.
A story told by some Native American peoples is that the Great Spirit decided to divide
the worlds of animals and man.
He gathered all the living beings on a great plain and drew a line in the dirt.
On one side of the line stood man and on the other side stood all of the animals of the earth.
When that line began to open up into a great canyon and at the last moment before
it became too great to cross, the dog jumped over and stood by man.

Yeah there's a lot of different versions of this parable. The ending is mine as far as I know.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Overly sentimental? Definitely. But I do so want it to exist.

The story of Skippy. Isn't that the one where a dog named Skippy lived in a retirement home and when one of the old fogeys would fart they'd blamed it on the dog? "Was that Skippy farting again?" asked one oldster to another. "Naw, man. That just another bark in the kennel." came the reply.

Nope. Skippy was my oldest brothers dog. She was a rescue from the dog pound. I promise to tell her story soon.
