I didn't get a phone that did anything besides call people until I was in my twenties. I think back to a childhood and teen years without constant texting, googling, etc. and I actually kind of miss it. I have a "smart" phone that acts very stupid at times and part of me thinks I should chuck it and stick with a land line. Then again, I feel better during the few instances I decide to actually be social and go somewhere, because having a phone on the road is really a nice security measure.
What I hate about phones today is if you miss a call. Years ago, if someone called me and I didn't answer it meant I wasn't home or didn't have a phone on me at the time. Now, if someone calls me and I don't answer it, the first assumption is I'm lying dead in a gutter. It's annoying.

As many have said, this will vary by child. My daughter got a basis smartphone when she turned 12, since she was about to start some after school activities that made having this time of communication easier on all of us. She has had an iPod that she can text on for a few years before that, that my parents bought her. First rule and lesson is, don't say or post any pictures that you would not say or show to your grandparents.

There is a local little league team experiencing why this rule must be established early on. 'Inappropriate' social media post disqualifies Atlee softball team from championship game | Sports | richmond.com Young kids may not fully understand the concept that once it's out there, it never goes away.

We don't really do the social media thing in our house. Never been on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. I do have a Pinterest account and to give her some experience, I allowed my daughter to join once she was 13. I follow her boards and she follows mine. We are discussing getting into Instagram, but again, it will be with the understanding that I can see all that she is posting. Bottom line is, it's my phone and data that I am letting her use.

Hey, since I'm re-reading "It" does anyone ever wonder how the novel would have read if set in the present day and the Losers Club all had cell phones and access to googling Pennywise? Imagine the facebook status updates about blood exploding from the sink and ominously being offered balloons by an evil clown.

Aside from these forums and a few others, I find social media boring. I can only look at so many selfies before everyone starts to look alike :/

Scott, you are an attractive man. Tracy married you, didn't she? I see a beautiful baby there and what looks like some antique oak behind you?

View attachment 22146 ....nobody looks like ME....I cornered the ugly market......

As a woman, I can safely say no, no you didn't!! Plus, there's nothing better IMO than a man with a sweet, sleeping baby in his lap. It's just perfect. :)

I'm speaking of the folks who seem to think the world needs to see their face every 10 minutes. "Here's me in front of Wal-Mart. Here's me in front of Safeway. Here's me inside the police station" etc. One girl I knew posted at least 5 selfies a day, either squinty eyed or with the duck face assuming it made her look sexy, when the correct answer was "like a jackass." :D

Beautiful baby godchild.
Again, only speaking as a woman but men who are confident in themselves are great but OVER confidence is the biggest turn off I can think of. Someone with a bit of humility is anything but. Ever been around someone, man OR woman, who couldn't seem to stop gazing at themselves in the mirror or taking pictures of themselves almost obsessively? It gets creepy, really quickly.
Me, I'm pretty plain looking and probably too skinny but I stopped trying to impress long ago.
