I forgot this thread was in place. I had the opportunity to see him speak here recently. I tell you, he was very funny, smart and just an interesting speaker. I could have listened to him for hours.

And I just came across his name...today I think. He'd seen The Wizard of Oz as...an eleven-year-old I think his age was...and that was enough to make him want to be a writer. I've only read his Midnight's Children...years ago. I liked the comedic tone of the telling, the way he uses words, language...but don't remember much more than that. Judy Garland was only 4' 11". One of the Gumm sisters.

He's the reason I hate Cat Stevens (or whatever he calls himself now). Asked what he thought of Rushdie being burned in effigy, ol Cat said it wasn't enough, said they should burn the actual man. He was totally serious about this--burn Salman Rushdie alive. Why? Because he wrote a damn book?

And this is the 'cat' who wrote Peace Train?

And I assume Cat would be considered a moderate Muslim.

"Sounds more like peace down the drain" Kurben LMAO!!

ETA: On Californication, Hank Moody names the dog he gives his daughter 'Yusef' because it was originally supposed to be named Cat Stevens. (It's a long plot/story element, he basically grabbed the wrong dog that the married boyfriend of the girl he's dating was supposed to keep for her, but somehow wound up with the dude's wife instead.. great series)

In the Globe and Mail, a Canadian national newspaper, I read an article about Salman Rushdie coming to Canada. It also stated that the FAA did not want him to land in Canada and, if Canada allowed this, then they would not be able to use U.S. airspace. Holy crap I thought, that's a pretty serious heavy threat. The next day the twin towers were attacked. I'm not sure what one has to do with the other but I always thought they were linked somehow.

What a horrible day that was - I feel that the world changed that day - it was like the beginning of WWIII (in my mind anyway).

It actually took me a few years before I started to feel semi-normal again. (I had lots of personal things going on at the time, too but still - a truly tragic day).
