At one of the schools where I taught, we did ethnic/culture studies. It included learning about different cultures, their food and dress. If a student was of the culture we were studying, the family often provide foods/ treats for the class. In this way we did not stereotype. Fried chicken was a must on some menus.

Makes me wonder if it's something that's on their regular rotation, and no one really thought about it/made the stereotype connection before it went to print. I know my kids' school has a regular meal rotation (the same however many main dishes and sides, scrambled into different combinations, then the combos rotated--in their case, the same choice combos come up every 8 weeks or so). If so, it could be an honest mistake.

Hi, Everybody!

Hey, Ms. Staro! When I read your thread title I automatically thought, "You have NOOOooooo idea how stupid." *chuckle*

That school was pretty ignorant to not know it would be offensive.

Have mercy! How are they planning to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Have people of color harvest fruits and vegetables in the fields? Mow the lawn? Clean house? Or have a nap (siesta) right after we eat the lunch of rice and beans? :tongue-new:

(Don't do the above!!!! *They* all carry switchblades, dontcha know?) ;)

Peace.
