In my town we had houses with these little ghost sticks to tell people whether it was ok to trick or treat there, a lot of houses had the ghost sticks which was cool.
Great idea!
A lot of houses here put creepy looking webs with spiders and other decorations out to let folks know they're participating.
Someone I was speaking to from my street tonight said that there was a FB page letting people know if they were in on it too... but I'd missed that.

I took the night off this year. But since I work tomorrow I got to stay up all night. Since I live in poor side of town all the kids go to the nice side. My son to. So I buy small bag just in case peanut fee. Since my son can't have peanuts he just dose the switch from the stash. then I hit the store first thing for the 50% off candy for myself. Also watching the return of the living dead...from the 80s. The really old cheesy one :)
Oh wow - totally forgot about that 50% off thing - it's probably too late now - it's almost 11:30 here already! (crap) :sorrow:

Over the years I’ve had a couple kids politely ask if any of my treats were free of their allergen. They did not want to be given something that could either make them ill or kill them. Nothing wrong with that. Saves them disappointment at home, and means more candy for other kids instead of them throwing it out.
Well that's great - especially if they were polite about it. Back when it was brought up I don't think we had as much awareness of how serious food allergies can be (this was quite a few years ago).
I remember the people at my work being happy that I took all the peanut containing candies out of Josh's bag and brought them in to share!

We had somewhere between 500 and 1,000 trick or treaters based on the amount of candy we went through (I had to make TWO runs for extra candy!). It turns out, we live a block down the way from this Harry Potter house that was featured all over the internet so we were getting all of the spillover. We also had some pretty rad decorations ourselves with our Pet Sematary. Thousands of trick or treaters converge on epic Harry Potter Diagon Alley in Seattle driveway – GeekWire
How fun!

Neesy I’m glad you didn’t just throw the candy away.

On an allergy forum I used to be active on people discussed how they handled Halloween with kids with food allergies. There were a lot of good ideas that allowed the kids to have fun and still stay safe. But a few parents just took all the candy and threw it away. I found that really ignorant. People spend a lot of money on that candy. Give it away, don’t just throw it away.

....I just sat in the fat man's recliner and waited for my eldest grandson to take pity on Pap and give him some candy.....apparently I had just the right pitiful expression on my mug and he gave me some malted milk balls.....cracked me up though when he pulled an item out of his Jack O Lantern bucket and exclaimed "There's something wrong with the lady who gave me this! It's a juice pack, not candy!!!".....ahhhh, the troubles of an 8 year old....

It used to piss me off when people gave me apples or raisins. ;-D

We never get trick or treaters but we always have some candy on hand -- just in case. *cough*

My daughter and her BFF came over; we carved pumpkins, made cookies and watched a playlist of musicians we lost last year. Then B got home, we had sandwiches and salad. Then had a casual ritual. The BFF lost her Mom in August so we wanted to keep it low-key. Since the BFF is also starting along the Wiccan path, I explained everything as we went. Short but sweet, with the cookies we made earlier as the cakes and grape juice as the "ale."

Then we watched The Daily Show to ground us and they went home.

You guys have the awesome apples. (and bing cherries too, I think)

Queen Anne cherries are better, IMHO. But more expensive. In cherry season, I keep a bowl of either one on the counter for walk-by grabs. I also have an apple every night for my midnight snack. I've become and apple snob but I'll spare everyone my ramblings on that! :D
