I know an honest plumber from Cheboygan! Small world! Before they had the bridge, they had the car ferry...so you could always claim to be a mermaid...fishy...something. Made the trip via ferry yay back...one of the unborn....Ma pregnant, heading home from Maryland where they'd lived for a time. So anyway...anyone gives you any guff, tell 'em you're pre-bridge, a pre-bridge mermaid...works for me.

It is! I'd bet dollars to doughnuts my dad knows him...

My folks probably remember the ferry times, but the bridge has always existed since I've been born. I guess that makes me a bonafide troll :/ Heck, I walked it during Labor Day weekend when I was about five. That was really terrifying actually! Do they still have that walk?

Always nice to run into a fellow Michigander!

Yes, they still walk the bridge (five miles long) on Labor Day, the governor in attendance. We have a bridge U.P. here that connects us to the rest of the world. The Portage Lake Lift Bridge:

That's the Isle Royal Queen passing under the span. Knew a man who had never seen this bridge, lived his life "nort a da bridge". Heh! Before he passed, some friends took him to town (Houghton) so he could see the bridge, see what "shopping" is all about. But I've heard from others that they do not like driving across the Mackinac Bridge. Do you remember who was governor when you walked the bridge?

I'm afraid I've never been to the Portage Lake Bridge. Next time we're in the area, I'll try to check it out.

We just drove across the Mackinac in December- we were staying right outside of St.Ignace for the holidays. I gotta say, I'm really not a fan of driving it, especially when it's windy!

I had to google who was governor when we walked it in 1982, it was William Milliken.

Do you mean a solar eclipse perhaps?

I actually did mean the sunset. When I see one, I tend to look very carefully on the theory that since a solar eclipse can hurt one's eyes, it might be wise to be cautious around sunsets. But I never found any good information about that. I always assumed if you were able to look without your eyes feeling pain, then it was okay; but perhaps there is a scientifically agreed upon point when it is safest to look?

The Lake Hawkins photos are particularly impressive.

Mr. Cranky, that still is from a television movie called The Midnight Hour, correct?
