I keep getting gardening/seed catalogs in the mail and just toss them aside thinking by the time the snow melts and the ground thaws to the point where we could have a garden there probably won't be enough time left in the season for much of anything to grow. :(

No tomatoes??????????? :tough:

What about cukes? How am I going to live without a tomato and cuke sammich?

I'm hoping the CSA we belong to has some secrets for growing them so we can get them there. It's not summer for me without a tomato and cuke sammich on soft white bread (may need to cheat on the gluten free diet) with (Hellman's!) mayo.

Can you container grow them? Either as a starter to replant in the garden ( if/when that snow melts), or just as a house plant. Southern window, large containers.

It's heaven, that sammich. I rarely use salt in anything, but sometimes I will sprinkle the tiniest bit on the tomato. Oh God I'm depressed now thinking about how long it's going to be before a garden tom is ready......I bought a couple of tomatoes at Hannaford for tacos the other day. Had to use the chain saw to slice them......

We've just bought seedlings the past few years as it's easier but even doing it that way unless we have a good, long warm spell as cold as it's been this year, it's going to take a long time for the frost to thaw out of the ground and warm up enough to the point that we can get plants in. I'm thinking mid-June at the very earliest and then we start getting cold again in September.

Have you tried the kumatoes? The color is a little weird--almost a reddish-brown--but they have more flavor than most grocery store tomatoes this time of year. No comparison at all to fresh from the garden tomatoes, of course.

I have not. Does your Hannaford have those? I have been having luck with what they call vine ripe tomatoes at Hannaford, but lately....well....... they stink!

I'll look for those kumatoes though. Thank you Ms. Mod!

The scenery makes up for a lot. Photos here for anyone interested...

It's been on my retirement travel bucket list but living there--at least in the winter--I couldn't do. It's hard enough putting up with winter in Maine! Only 3 more years, though, and Arizona here I come for the winter! ;-D
