I just found out about human zoos, another example of how people place so little value on others different than they. How sad to have this in our history.

Native Americans from Labrador, Canada, sit in a special Human Zoo in Germany in 1880. Human Zoos existed in Europe and the US throughout the late 1800s, with kidnapped people from around the world told to live normally in forced enclosures for paid patrons to watch. It is believed some 35,000 people were forced into these zoos, usually tricked under false pretenses, and they were big business. For example, the 1889 World Fair, which had 28 million people attend, displayed 400 indigenous people from around the world as one of its key major attractions.

Many of these captives died within a year of being on display. Have you guys ever heard of these zoos?

Judging from their dress it seems unlikely that these people are from Labrador

They look like they came from a tropical country

I'm no expert but it's pretty cold in Labrador so why are they in such skimpy attire?

Thanks for posting this danie

Where did you find it?

Edit: I just clicked on your link - these folks are the Igorot who came from a remote region of the Philippines

You may be right; I just copied and pasted the caption along with the picture (Imgur.com), but maybe they were on display in a warmer area/time of year, so they were hot? Or it could be that those who kidnapped them wanted to make them appear very different than white people, so they could have dressed them however they wanted.

The link you provided (one of them anyway) took me to CBC.ca and The Nature of Things which incidentally is a very good show;
Yes I think you're right - that caption was incorrect. :)

Amazing that this sort of thing took place!:disturbed:

That's the same link I provided in the original post. Sorry the first caption was incorrect. According to the article, the natives on display are Igorot people from the Philippines.
"One of the most popular exhibits was the Igorot village, an ethnic group perceived as the least civilized of those on display. An audience success; the revenue from this attraction was said to have surpassed that of all the other villages combined. This exhibition featured indigenous people in minimal clothing..."

The people in the picture are definitely Filipino - their facial features are different from Canadian Innu

Seems like somebody at Imgur.com wasn't paying attention :witless::umm:

By the way that link was very interesting - thanks :grinning:

Wow, no I never heard of that.. it does remind me of The Twilight Zone episode People Are Alike All Over with Roddy McDowall.

Yep it is called Newfoundland Labrador and these people do not look much like Inuit.
Yes, I know Newfoundland Labrador; I just didn't pay much attention to the caption when I copied and pasted the picture in my OP. Please to forgive, all ye Canadians!

The fact is, the human zoos were a travesty, regardless from where the displayed people were kidnapped.
