Yes, I know Newfoundland Labrador; I just didn't pay much attention to the caption when I copied and pasted the picture in my OP. Please to forgive, all ye Canadians!

The fact is, the human zoos were a travesty, regardless from where the displayed people were kidnapped.
You are forgiven lol. Actually, one of my family members dates a lady who is Inuit from there.

...I had heard of these, and yes-they were reprehensible....but others may view a zoo of animals in the same negative light....I am not condoning what amounts to early human trafficking/slavery, nor am I poo-pooing our modern day zoo's, just putting my finger in the icing.....also, one further point-I work in what I consider a zoo of society....what else is a prison???.....

I only agree with animals who are kept in wildlife reserves. We have a wonderful one in Newfoundland not far from my home town. These animals have miles and miles in which to play and they are protected.

I saw human zoos in county and state fairs growing up. They were called "freak shows." Sure, the people in there arguably were there of their own will and were at their best and highest level (which is really sad to say), but they were zoos and virtual animal performances.

I had friends who had to go see. It never appealed to me. Whatever schadenfreude is, I have the opposite of it. It makes me very uncomfortable - really, skin-crawling - to see people humiliated or embarrassed. (It was the reason I couldn't watch Meet the Parents. I walked out.)

Anyway, the depths to which humans subjugate, marginalize, and assert feigned dominance over one another is a tragic consistency through our history.

Since you're a school teacher and normally wicked smaht, we'll let this one slide.... :peace::m_bigwink:

But to get back to the thread topic, I guess back in the distant past (even though it was exploitation) they were advertising this as a sort of education (I suppose) - of course it was degrading to those involved and done almost surely for profit.

Reminds me of the freak show in the circus
