I saw a segment on PBS last night about the Texas Medical Center in Houston and how they were functioning. A few years ago, they built an expensive flood wall system around the place and it worked very well. The medical personnel are basically living there right now and the complex is functioning at a remarkable level considering the problems.

Some other hospitals didn't fare as well. Ben Taub, the main trauma hospital, had to evacuate early because they got water in the basement that messed up the electrical system. But the Med Center learned its lesson after Allison -- good to see.

Charms/Cheri said a family member went to a local Kroger. The line was around the entire store and parking lot. Limited staff, limited number inside the store at one time, limited amount of food could be purchased.

The Kroger near us was shut completely the last time I drove past. I went into Randall's last night -- there were still plenty of things to buy, but no meat (except frozen or packaged deli), produce, dairy.

Our post office has been closed, too.

Cheri is in Katy.Luckily in an area that did not require evac. She's recovering from a hospital stay and awaiting being able to get needed meds.

I saw a horrible news story this morning about a toddler found (alive!) clutching to his dead and floating mother in Beaumont, TX. It's just so awful and heartbreaking. It reminded me that I used to know someone who lived in Beaumont (she's deceased) and her daughters still live there. I really hope they're ok. :(

The main airport, George Bush, is going to start limited domestic flights today at 4 pm and hope to be back to full schedule by the weekend.
My sister that lives in the Seattle area has a friend from Pennsylvania staying with her. She was supposed to fly out yesterday with a stop over in Houston then on to PA but they obviously had to change plans. She flies out Friday now with a stop over in Denver. The airlines wanted to charge her $100 to change the flight, even thought the airlines knew that her flight would be cancelled because they couldn't land in Houston. Greedy b*stards! My sister set them straight on that one, let me tell you!!

Not sure if it's been posted yet but you can donate $10 if you text RedCross to 90999. I found out Saturday when Bill Prady, the Executive Producer of Big Bang Theory, Tweeted that if we did that and posted a confirmation (screen capture the phone screen) in reply to his Tweet, he'd match the donation. If we also sent the image to 45 and suggested that money set aside for a certain edifice be used for flood relief instead, Prady would double his matching amount. Thousands responded.
