I have a separate hard drive that I use to back up with Time Machine rather than completely relying on the Cloud plus there are some things I would prefer not to have on the Cloud. It's always a good idea to back up all your data immediately before installing an OS upgrade in addition to doing it even weekly if you add a lot of new data in between. I realize that's not going to help your current situation but maybe going forward you could consider trying that.

Yeah, I have Time Machine, but either don't understand how to use it or it dumped all the same things with the upgrade. Because I am seeing the same gaps in the same places in every version of the photo library. I am now wondering what medium is recommended to save all digital pictures as hard copy--rather than printing them, as I have over 15,000 and ink and paper cost a fortune!

Wrote the following to my tech. Maybe someone with experience in creating a digital slide show, which I have never done, can answer the questions at the end.

You have taken great care of me, and thank you for that, but as for Apple, what torture will they devise for the next upgrade? It seems destroying iTunes and iPhoto should be more than enough to last for YEARS! People ought to start keeping track of all the man-hours wasted on their devious evil plots! I know I lost eleven days on iTunes alone and was driven nearly round the bend! If I were SURE my cherished photos from FOUR YEARS of my life were REALLY LOST, I would sue for emotional distress! I don’t need them NOW, but I am losing enough peace of mind over getting Mom’s party right without additional factors! So the sooner they are recovered, if possible, the better! Right now I am clinging to two things: 1. Hope that the images are not really lost. 2. Hope that if they can be recovered before the party the adrenaline rush will get me through whatever else I need to undergo. Meanwhile I’ve made up my mind to drive into town on Monday and buy two large solid wooden picture frames, so I can at least have a nice print display regardless of what happens with the slide show! Keep in mind even if I get the show put together, I have no idea of how to project it! If I got it on a thumbnail drive or something, could it be played directly to one or both monitors, without having to bring computers into it? Thanks.

Time Machine would need a separate hard drive, not the same computer, to protect you from the kind of data loss you had.

Silly me, after going through all this I found one on my desk, only I'm afraid to turn it on and either find the missing pictures are not on there, or they are and turning the machine on causes it to eat them! I'm waiting to see if the tech will get together with me and see me through this ordeal.

A removable hard drive for storage is almost necessary anymore. I had to break down and get one last year, It's 1/2 a terrabyte and 70% full now.

I have one I wasn't turning on regularly because sometimes I forget to turn it off and the fan runs and makes a noise and the drive gets hot.

Right now it looks as if the Operating System upgrade may have messed with iPhotos, and the compromised library was imported from there into Photos. Neither running First Aid on all disk volumes nor Repair nor Rebuild brought the missing pictures back to iPhoto--so I don't have them to import into Photos even supposing I trusted Photos as far as I could spit in a high wind which I don't.

Then there's the matter that the scans of vintage pictures can't all be done at one standard setting--it has to be according to the size of the original image and the size of how large a print you might want--so I have to consult a chart and change the setting between each bloody scan OF THOUSANDS OF IMAGES (not to mention negatives and slides) or face doing it all over--it's discouraging, degrading, and demoralizing--he will probably say no, but I'm going to beg to be told--PLEASE--isn't there some resolution low enough not to be ridiculously much, and high enough to make every scan good enough regardless of the size of the original or desired print? If I could just SET THE SCANNER AT THAT, AND KEEP IT THERE--THAT ALONE would made my life much more bearable.

Regarding the scans, I'm putting them in a folder and in no hurry to put the folder into either iPhoto or Photos--Image Capture hasn't let me down yet, but why give it the chance? I hope that something better comes along.

Who is this tech guy? Personal, or someone in support lines?

Because it seems you have quite the conversations with him.

He is the World's Most Wonderful Mac whiz and the only Mac technician within a 35-mile drive! The others nearby retired and even when working could do only limited things--for anything really complicated I had to drive 70 miles and pay a fortune! I pray unceasingly for his continued good health! I just wrote him this:

Is what I asked above a possibility, my not touching the RAID drive until I can bring it to you on Monday or Tuesday, whichever works best for you? I don’t want to wait till much later to buy the frames for the print pictures. If you can’t have a working laptop by then, would a thumbnail drive work? I have an 8 GB with only about a dozen pictures on it from the last two years, which don’t have to be there. I can either wipe it clean and bring it, or if it’s not enough to hold four years’ worth of pictures, tell me what size is and I will pick one up at Walmart before coming over. That way you can transfer the pictures onto something other than the hard drive, and I won’t be responsible for the hard drive blowing to Kingdom Come if I turn it on, as all this equipment obviously hates me! Hope this idea works. Once I have what I am sure is all the pictures from December 2010-June 2014, I can use them to start a new library in a new Program, whatever Program you say is best, and reimport all previous images on CD and images after 2014 on memory stick. Of course that doesn’t take care of images I got from other sources--for instance over 300 from one sister’s phone, pictures they sent in emails, and so on, but those which exist in iPhoto could perhaps be imported from there into the other Program, then check Photos to make sure it doesn’t have any iPhoto does not, which it shouldn’t. Tedious but I’d like to be SURE they are ALL in some program which HOPEFULLY WORKS BEFORE subscribing to some service such as Google Photos or Amazon Photos--maybe keep some images in one and some in another depending on the number allowed. I’d like some way to still have iCloud capability, but bypassing Photos entirely. I’ll probably save any existing pictures on both iPhoto and Photos as backups at least for awhile till I’m reasonably sure they’re safe elsewhere but not use either App as my main program. Is it possible to copy any of my pictures which are digitized, either on CD, shot digitally, or scanned, onto some medium to store outside computers and hard drives entirely? If CDs are no good, what medium should I use? When I have unlimited time and money I want to print them all. Ha. Thanks.

Okay how many images are you actually showing at this birthday party, and will there be an intermission?

Posted the following on the Family Facebook Page. At best, someone may help. At worst, they should appreciate how I have suffered.

Hey, all. In going through digital photos preparing to make prints and a slide show for Mom's party, I discovered that the Operating System upgrade lost some pictures from my iPhoto Library. Thanks to my excellent tech having installed the latest version of iPhoto before the execrable upgrade to Photos, it lost only some of my pictures rather than dumping the entire library as did happen to many users.

Some of the pictures definitely taken on my camera and probably on my phone were from a four-year period (roughly the same time Donald lived with us), during which my ONLY copies were on iPhoto, which I foolishly trusted and so did not make CDs nor save memory sticks for those years. I know how many images are missing from certain events only because I made Facebook albums of those events and can compare number of images in those albums to number left in iPhoto.

No attempts restored the missing images, so I have arranged to bring an external hard drive which I have, but am deathly afraid to turn on myself, to my tech so he can duplicate the drive, then rebuild a library using whatever remains on there plus images I have added to the other libraries since.

I will NEVER, EVER trust an Apple Photo App again! My tech suggests Adobe Lightroom, a paid program, but the cost is small and it's worth much more never to have to undergo this torture again! Meanwhile as you may have guessed, not too many scans are getting done.

Another thing I was attempting to do was tag all images containing a reasonably flattering likeness of at least one family member to share on the Cloud where those wishing to share images could do so without having to email them to me. The Photos App, which I won't use on principal anyway, is as useless for that as are Facebook albums, as both contain reduced quality images no good to print. For those of you wishing to send scans, it will have to be by email until I work something out. My tech recommends the following resolutions. Please scan these size images at these resolutions.

Printing quality = 200ppi

ORIGINAL > Scan @PPI = Output resulting 8x10 print

2x3 wallet > scan 800ppi
4x6-5x7 > scan 400ppi
8x10 > scan 200ppi

Slides/Negs > scan 1600ppi

Right now all I can promise is the party will feature some pictures. How many in what format I don't know. When I go to meet my tech I will stop and buy some large frames of the same kind in which I have done photo tributes before, so unless something breaks down either here or at the drug store I should at least have those. As for a slide show, if I get Adobe Lightroom and it has a great way for easily putting together a slide show, fine. If it even STARTS WITH ME, TO COMMENCE TO ATTEMPT TO TORTURE ME in the way that iPhoto and Photos have, ALL BETS ARE OFF! Anyone reading this with experience making digital slide shows who is willing to attempt to put one together, let me know and I can email you pictures--I refuse to kill myself over this! If no one wants to or can, hey, I tried. As for some way to project said show, it may come to transporting our own personal TV to the place which will require major help!

I still do want to build a digital database of all my pictures along with as many other important images (such as family pictures) as possible, so I haven't given up on that--just saying the less anyone expects miracles in the week left before the party, the less they will be disappointed.

Sorry, had to rant about this somewhere...

I hate loud vehicles. Or motorbikes. Or anything that can wake the dead. And in my cozy little neck of the woods, there's no law against having a REALLY LOUD motor. Or I suppose it's the exhaust, I'm not a car person. And on my block alone, there's easily four different houses that believe in drawing all the wrong kinds of attention to themselves. It's almost as if they like being hated and despised. There's one old fart in particular that will turn on his Harley at least ten times a day, and either roar around the block at obviously illegal speeds, or sit in his driveway, revving his engine over and over. Why?! Why must people be so insistently rude?

And why do the rest of us have to grit our teeth and deal with it? That's what I hate most. That these collosal P***** have the right to piss of 90% of the population, but the rest of us have no rights at all to do anything about it. AAAAUGH!!!!

That is just the nature of some people. They love making other people mad.
I listen to cars going by with the loud thump, thump of their music. Sometimes it is so loud it rattles the windows in the house. There is no need for that. I'm not talking just during the day either. All hours of the night also. To me, I think it just shows their ignorance.

How do you people put up with with USPS? Every time I have to, I understand the term "going postal" a bit more.

My son ordered something from a company. On September 20 USPS website updated to say they had received notification that the parcel would be coming. The company he ordered from updated the same day to advise the parcel was sent to USPS. That was the 20th....and NOTHING since.

On September 25 he ordered something from a company that ships from a Canadian site. I just checked. It was received by Canada Post last night, and by 9 this morning it is out for delivery. The tracking shows each step...when it goes in, when it ships out.

I keep checking the tracking info on the first package ordered on the Canadian site. Often they update that it's out for delivery before USPS even acknowledges they have received it.

Welcome to the world of the USPS. Their tracking used to good, now, it's hit and miss. I have sent packages where the track stays on the same notification for days, yet it was delivered.

I've had that same problem with USPS.
I saw one item I ordered that was said it was at a post office for about 3 weeks, and it had been delivered way before that. They are terrible with the tracking.

The company that sent it to USPS has updated to say the package is in Canada.

USPS still says they have not received it.

Canada Post (who I assume now has custody) doesn't recognize the number I have. Usually the same number transfers to Canada tracking.

I sent a package to Ireland once. My postal tracking told me it was delivered to her door. She is telling me, she didn't get. I go to the post office complaining, they tell me she got it. I went home, the friggin' package is ON MY DOORSTEP.

Explain that.

I once got into a very heated discussion with a CSR. My parcel was lost. I mean, completely lost. When I called Canada Post they said they could only discuss with their customer...which was the company that shipped to me. That company refused to look into it until 6 months because it's always slow in Canada. Turned out they had put the wrong postal code in my parcel.

I couldn't believe a company that deals only through mail delivery was willing to make a customer wait 6 months.
