Well, I did enjoy Close Encounters, mostly, but the part that had my peers all impressed
when the ship came up from behind Devil's Tower
just had me muttering, "Oh, come on."
I mean, how did that massive thing hide back there? I've been to Devil's tower and walked around it.
Completely trashed the willing suspension of disbelief for me.
And yeah, I knew it was Devil's Tower from the first shot at the mashed potatoes.
Maybe 'they' had the lights turned off before 'they' came up behind Devil's Tower? ;-D

Okay, I am prepared to be burned at the stake for this.

*SIGH*

IT!

I finished IT annnnnd....not feeling IT that much. I understand the big deal but I wasn't feeling the mode. It didn't click very well with me.

You may all finish me off now.

I hear ya. I'm a huge fan of a number of his works (hence my appreciation for being here in the House that Gracious Host built). But not that title.

There were things I liked a lot about it. I consider the Holy trinity of King's standalone work The Stand, The Shining, and IT. I guess The Shining isn't standalone anymore but that's besides the point.

I write myself and all and far be it from me to critique Mr. King but ya know? Sometimes ya can't help it.

For example the things I love - The general concept of the novel is brilliant, writing is dense and beautiful, intro is possibly one of his, and the usage of the interludes is masterfully done. There were just some things, after awhile, that weren't adding up for me.

I can return to The Dead Zone, The Stand, Firestarter, and On Writing anytime, anywhere in the stories, as well as a number of his shorts. People here are entrenched in The Dark Tower works, and I will have to pick them up.

IT was just personally distasteful to me in several ways that don't matter to anyone else. But I couldn't get past them for a full appreciation. However, I was prepared to like the miniseries
but it got sillier, and the big spider prop at the end killed it for me
.

Hmmmm I'd have to say my tops are 11/22/63, The Talisman, Different Seasons, and The Shining. Love On Writing as well, The Stand and DT books

I don't get Star Wars. At all. Not my thing. Saw the first one when I was a kid and was totally bored. The only redeeming factor for me was a new hair style to try out. I was forever trying to make buns on the sides of my head.

I got Star Wars all the way up until I read Asimov's first three Foundation books -- then I got angry about just how much stuff was lifted from there.........still, I would keep up with Star Wars but I noticed a rapid slide in believe-ability for each successive movie, removing a LOT of the "Science" element from ScienceFiction, becoming very inane by the "Return of the Jedi"/third movie......

The worst part for me? Rogue One was probably the best Star Wars movie for myself because it had some of the most likeable/loveable characters (including the droid) in the entire Star Wars franchise that we will never ever see again....yet, somehow, Jar Jar got three movies <groan>

(A little late for this, but anyway...)

I love Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The premise, the pacing, the music, the special effects.

I do not know if that is the case with people here, but I would imagine some kind of people saying it is "too slow". For me, the mystery around everything is a good part of the experience. Of course, I suppose that would be different for someone who actually recognized Devil's Tower before watching this movie.

Wearing two different colored socks. I can see the attraction, somewhat, as you don't need the bedroom light on when picking out your socks. But it looks plum stupid.

I would more easily accept it if the rest of the attire had similar asymmetry (if your are gonna do it, then overdo it). But if it is just the socks, then I find it weird.

Ditto. I was hoping that he would just disappear from the spot light but then he went and married Kim Kar-trash-ian so now we'll never get rid of him....

My daughter and her daughter rather revel in colorful, mismatched socks. I think it's cute, but it could be observational bias. Asymmetrical shirts and pants seem to be hard to come by, and it would be silly to wear differently configured shoes.

I brought them back toe-socks from Hong Kong that were brightly patterned. They squeeee'd. Couldn't wait to wear them mismatched. Again, I thought it was cute. Again, there may be observational bias involved.

I actually like Kanye. He's the only 'rapper' I keep up with... though it could be argued he hasn't really done rap in ten years. He's an astounding producer-- even when his flow is messy or his lyrics are weak, his albums just sound boss.

And he's got a little bit of the Donald Trump thing: he says crazy bullsh*t for attention, and it works. I think the guy's an idiotic publicity hound, but I like his music.

!!!

I feel so strange getting anything between my toes, it is weird for me even to look at someone else wearing those socks with toes... :crushed:

Now that is something I "don't get", but other people seem to find them comfortable.

As for asymmetry, I am currently playing Final Fantasy X-2, a video game where this guy is a character:

After seeing that, a couple of mismatched socks is pretty normal, after all. ;;D

Back in the day (early '80's) I used to wear Converse All-Star Hi-Tops. I had a red pair and a purple pair. Used to wear one of each color at the same time. Must have been my rebellious nature showing..... Anyhoo, I recently noticed that Brooklyn Beckham is doing the same thing. People on social media are going crazy and calling him out for it and saying he's an idiot, etc. What's the big deal? So he's being 'different'. It's not hurting anyone, right? :congratulatory:
