Haven't seen any of his films in years. It's only this last year I read about his racist comments towards the African American and Native American people. I'll not be watching any of his stuff again.
....you must remember he was a product of the times....no excusing the incorrectness, but his generation held to those beliefs-and, other icons felt the same, their views just never became public record...

I know, people like that have voted the younger generation out of Europe. Walking round using the word 'nowadays' a lot, when in fact theiradays , it was a lot worse. ie 'cops attitude to young blacks NOWADAYS'

There does seem to be some revisionist thinking on John Wayne.. I do know that in several of the movies that I have watched he treated the American Indian with respect, and those that mistreated the American Indian he held in contempt.. Most recently in Chisum, and Fort Apache, I saw those examples.. And just because they're old films do not mean that they are bad films as another poster seems to think..

I'm talking about his personal views, not his film persona.

Although many of our old films are racist, (not just the western), some can still be well acted, or be a good story. I recommend a documentary called Reel Injun, which is about the native american role in hollywood. Very very informative.

And, while many of our films are racist, sexist, ageist, elitist -- they are all a reflection of our world -- history. They have captured the milieu of the times. They are time capsules in celluloid.

People's racist views are a product of their time as Scott said. We are coming out of the dark ages slowly on all sorts of "isms" and the hope is that as people learn better, they do better. Duke was racist, as was most of Hollywood.

There was the Hollywood Blacklist. It was crazy times. And those crazy times are coming back. It's acceptable now to be an asshat "ism" supporter.

Try google
Yeah, a quick look shows that apparently he thought the Indians had too much land when the country was first opened up for development.. I didn't see where he was being racist towards them though.. Of course we all know that everything that is on the internet is true haha..

Exactly. If we don't condemn old school racism, then how can we expect the youth of today to understand?

I would hate to condemn a person for one interview that may or may not have been distorted by the author or editors.. And I think that is enough on the subject for me..

....yeah, I'm not trying to defend any type of racism, just like Deej said-it was the times...and ever so slowly we seem to be creeping out of the bog of bigotry....though the latest headlines would have you thinking otherwise....hell, I was a racist in my younger days-didn't know any better, having grownup in a sheltered whitebread world, but once I got to know some folk-I realized they are damn fine-stupid though knows no color boundaries-and those are the ones I have contempt for......
