Hi All. I turned in my two weeks notice on Saturday so June 3rd will be my last day of employment. I have no job lined up to go to. I finally reached the point where I could not take any more of the stupidity of management and stress that this job involves. Plus, my manager basically called me a liar on the walkie-talkie headsets that everyone wears and even after it being pointed out to him by another employee that he was in the wrong (I wasn't lying) he didn't have the decency to apologize to me for his mistake. Sorry, but one of my main credos in life is don't call me a liar. I cannot work for someone who obviously doesn't think very highly of me or respect me. Many of you know that I have not been happy at my job for quite some time. My inner voice tells me it's time to move on and that's what I'm doing. There's so many things wrong with this job and company and I'm not going to have a mental breakdown because of a job. I'm scared out of my mind as I'm a 57 year old male with limited skills so I don't know what's going to happen in the next few months but I intend to give it my best. I'm going to need as many well wishes and happy thoughts that you all can spare. Thanks for 'listening'.
Brave move, Dana. All well wishes, green lights, and prayers for you. Get your resume in line, see if there are any skills you can brush up, and press onward!

I'm referring more in terms of if I applied at say an insurance company to do a job that involved working on a computer, etc. It's not a strong suit for me. I know basics, but am not a whiz at creating folders, etc.
It might be worth checking into with your local library. Ours has great free computer courses, specifically with the goal of helping people improve their job skills. Being able to use programs like Excel, Word, etc. is almost a necessity now.

Dana, I'm so very proud of you for standing up for yourself and happy that you will be away from all that negativity. I hope you find a job that's a perfect fit for you. You are such a special person with so much to give. I feel certain that you will find a job soon and you will be wondering why you ever stayed so long with the lunatics! Best of luck and I am thinking of you! :love_heart:

Thank you! I'm am now in the 'I just don't give a sh*t' mode at work. I'm happy but nervous about what I've done but it had to happen now.
Well,if you are used to wearing to wearing a headset and talking to people over it,and can keyboard, you are already halfway to being a dispatcher for an emergency service! Check with your local sheriff's office, state police barracks,or ambulance service,if you can keep your cool and relay information under pressure you can do that job,and they usually have health benefits..

Thank you, Neesy!
Like you, I basically quit my old job, but I did have the option of returning, due to the fact it is the same Union. So I had a bit of a security blanket. I am close to your age (sorry - it's a NATO secret haha) so I know how you feel.

p.s. 57 is not too old to try something new - look at Colonel Sanders - wasn't he over 65 when he opened his first KFC?

Good luck

p.p.s. Can you collect Employment Insurance while looking for a new position?

p.m.s. ;;D I heard from one of the doctors that they are two weeks behind on operative reports! :p:smiley_simmons: So at the risk of sounding childish

Neener neener to them!

kingricefan , that's exciting! Congrats for standing up for yourself and deciding not to take any more s*** from people. :p:victorious: I think so little of supervisors and higher-ups who think it's a good idea to shame or reprimand their employees in front of others. That happened to my husband a few weeks ago; the CFO was apparently having a bad day and took it all out on him during a big meeting. Everyone in the department and beyond was talking about the episode for the rest of the week. You don't DO that. If there's an issue with someone you work with, you talk to them privately.

Anyway, I'm so glad that you are finally free of that job, and I hope you find something much better that will bring you happiness. :lol2:

Thanks for the input, but I hate wearing those headsets (I feel like I'm wired into the matrix!) and a dispatcher job would for sure make me lose my cool as I would want to reach through the phone and help whoever's calling. Too much stress. :O_O:

I don't know about unemployment benefits. I always thought that if you quit your job you didn't qualify because then everyone would quit working and collect the benefits? I will certainly try though as it would sure help me stretch what little money I have saved up.

I think you would have to have a good reason to quit - well, that is how it works in Canada I think. I have been employed pretty much full time since... Well - a long, long time! (Man I am getting old!) :Oo:

If you could just show them how demeaning it was to work there and be treated unfairly and that you had had enough, then that might help your case.

I am not suggesting you just collect "pogey" (that is our nickname for it) until your benefits run out :biggrin2: - it is basically just a tool to assist you in making ends meet until you can find more gainful employment.

Rather than work until I turn 65 there are times I feel like quitting, but since I got the new job I really am much happier. So we will see how it goes. I had to go down to the bottom of the pecking order in terms of choosing vacation time, but I still got my full five weeks off. I have a couple of weeks coming up in October around our Thanksgiving so that will be nice.

;-D

You will do just fine. Good for you! But you gotta start looking.

Indeed.com is a great suggestion.
I will also add CareerBuilder and Monster Jobs - Job Search, Career Advice & Hiring Resources | Monster.com

Not sure, but I think that indeed.com covers listings from the two I mentioned.

I've gone through headhunters many times so don't rule out a contract position.

But keep in mind, it might take longer than you think. Fight for Unemployment - and that can take forever too.
