I can't believe they cast roland as a black man. And know it doesn't mean I'm a racist for crying out loud. This is why movies suck. And king feels the same way. He can't say anything bc it wouldn't be politically correct.

So much of roland s relationship with Odette has to do with race. Now this tells me that this whole aspect of her character won't include this. And let's face it, it is what makes her entirely. With that gone there is no Odette walker. Her saying what she says and acting just doesn't work with roland being black. It just doesnt. Hollywood could screw up a , well u know the rest. This will not be a movie based on the dark tower books. Just like king insisted the title be Stanley kubricks, the shining. Should do same here.

I'm a idris fan. I really like him. Just sick of hollywood. Maybe bc I love the tower so much. I know the answer will be well don't go see it then. Hard to explain. I guess I wanted the movie version to be true to the book bc I wanted people who haven't read the books know what a master piece this is.

Maybe in a few years Mr. King will enter the realm of cantankerous, crotchety old guy (but still healthy with his wits about him) and he will abandon political correctness and tell us how he really felt about that whole Elba thing (and other stuff too)!

I'm willing to admit that I feel the exact same way for the relationship reason as well. It fundamentally changes the story that I have loved for a good majority of my life. But guess how we can solve this - read the books again and not watch the movie.

I don't get it. Why does it matter what color the actor who plays Roland is? If the fact that Elba is black is going to spoil the movie for you, then don't watch it.
So far as Stephen King one day telling the truth about how he really feels about Elba, he already has. Stephen King doesn't play at pretending to be PC. He says what he thinks, even if it isn't rude or inconsiderate. The truth is not always hateful.
If he didn't think a black actor could play Roland he'd say so. There is no creative reason Elba won't work that I can see. All the racial stuff Odetta experienced was in her history. Roland came from a different when than she, where possibly being black wasn't a problem.

Say sorry about the dead horse.

T what racial things she experienced in her history. It's her whole relationship with roland of her being racist towards him. It defines there relationship. That basis carries on the whole book. None of that can possibly happen if roland is black. They just made a huge mistake here but like everyone is saying. What can u do except not spend money on the movie.

O my gosh. I just cured the problem. Cast Odetta Holmes as white. Then there whole dynamic can be restored.
You think?
Detta Walker and Odetta Holmes, they are not the same personalities. Walker was insane and a big fat racist. Holmes was a civil rights activist, not a racist. She was not violent or dangerous. Unless one feels threatened by people sharing rights equally.
I don't think Roland would have any problems with Odetta, no matter what color each of them were.

I have never interpreted The Drawing of the Three as basically about racism but that Detta's racism was a secondary aspect of the real person she became; or rather, it went away when she became Susannah. With a black Roland the racism could remain and be portrayed by a black Detta who might consider him an Uncle Tom or offer some other reason to hate him for being black.

Change is inevitable when adapting books to film. Changing the race of the title character of any tale is just assanine and tells you all you need to know about what the director thinks of the source material. Follow that up with introducing a new main character that was barely mentioned in the last book and now you have an adaptation in name only. This pompous jerkoff director should just film himself taking a steaming dump on the books and those of you cheering these decisions should be forced to watch that for two hours.

You say true, and I say thank ya.
