As I get older and grouchier, I tend to feel less for my fellow humans than I do animals. I walk by bell ringers outside of stores at Christmas time without giving them a second glance. I drive by people on the side of the road holding "Will work for food" signs barely even registering them. But if I see a dog or cat in my neighborhood that looks hungry or hurt, I'll bust my ass trying help it in any way I can. I don't remember animals ever coming near me when I was younger, but now it seems like animals will walk up to me after making eye contact. Maybe the animals can sense I'm not as big of an a$$hole as I know I once was. If I was a dog or cat, I wouldn't have walked up to younger me either. I think older me is a better person than younger me but it would have been hard to score much lower than younger me. I wouldn't give up my dog or cat for anything, they both can make my day better by just jumping up onto the couch with me.
...no my brother, animals sense the goodness and compassion within you...we are kindred souls. mean as busted hill of fire ants on the outside-simply to protect a caring heart...yeah, we can be dicks...but the gentleness always wins through....and for the record, I'm the same way in public...and like you, my back is to something solid when out, or facing a fracking door...but let a dog or cat come near, and I'm pretty much mush...

I hear ya about ignoring the bell ringers and work for food signs. I've been burned by a few people claiming to need help and the CEOs of those charity organizations live large --too large for my taste.

Animals love without expectations . . .and only take what they need.
...and I have seen it with my own eyes locally...the ratty ass, sad faced panhandler with his "will work for food, need to feed my kids" sign...I watched him leave his "post" at the entrance to the local Wal-Mart drive, and head over to his CADILLAC for a bit...good thing I'd left the gun at home that day....

I am not going to read the story- the words in the link are enough to make me sick and make me want to hurt whoever did this to that poor animal. No animal deserves this kind of treatment. NONE! I can't even watch those commercials on TV for the animal shelters- it hurts my heart too much to see abused defenseless animals. With much sarcasm in my voice I say the words of Nat King Cole: 'What a wonderful world.......'

Totally agree! That was my first thought that no way I was going to read it. Makes me so angry! People are SICK!!!

That sums it up exactly sir, as you are always able to do. My wife has mentioned on several occasions how bell ringers and people asking for donations will usually not talk to us or approach when I'm with her but always seem to seek her out when she is alone..lol

I assume everyone who is upset by this is a vegan, otherwise you're being very hypocritical getting all upset about this story. The animals that provide meat, eggs and dairy live a life of misery and torture.
You know what they say about ass-u-ming? No, I am not vegan. I guess maybe I am being hypocritical, too. You're right, maybe we (un-vegan folk) go about our daily lives not really giving much thought about where our food comes from. But, that doesn't mean we don't have a heart and can't show some compassion for one of God's creatures that has been abused. So, that said, if your post is your way of feeling superior to the rest of us un-vegan type, then more power to you. It does come across as alittle offensive in its own way, ya dig? Why do you feel you have to state something that is belittling to us when we're clearly showing some compassion and outrage about an animal being abused?

Jordy...Stirring the pot tonight aren't you? Back in the 80's I read Tim Robbins 'Diet for a New America'. Subsequently, went vegetarian for several years. Got sick, added eggs and milk and small bits of fish, and meat. I have been taught how to gut a fish, have shot and skinned venison, and was at a farmyard (age 5) on slaughter day. I can provide 'flesh' if my family needs it. We've incorporated soy, almond, other 'whole' proteins into our diet.
I understand your point. We all want what is best for critters, planet and our wallets.. Heck, I wish every animal destined for someone's dinner plate was raised 'free', we didn't over farm our oceans, and we could all be fairies and unicorns while on vacation... But that isn't happening soon. Little changes, over time, yield results...preaching at the choir..not so much.

Awesome response. I'd just end up writing something stupid and 5th grade-ish if I tried to go blow for blow. You rock kingricefan.

...I don't consider them pets, they are mostly raised as food and I love my eggs, beef, chicken , pork etc...but don't EVER call me a hypocrite simply because I grieve for domesticated animals that are by and large loved as pets...have a potato and chill out...

...not enough fiber in his diet...maybe a lovely kiwi/cauliflower Scooby-snack would do him...meanwhile, I'll be over here chowing down on a well-done burger with a side of country fried chicken with pork gravy....

Great quote! Best one I've seen in a long time. Made me laugh. Thanks GNT!

And I agree with you, farm animals are not pets. I don't think they should be treated harshly, but they are not pets. I eat them, and likely always will. I also kill deer and eat them to. (I've even eaten a squirrel or two in my day) :)

In short, I don't think you or I are hypocrites.
Much love!
