I remember watching The Stand a few years ago and oddly enough, that was the book that inspired me to start writing seriously. Of course, every one of his books that I read after watching that movie, inspired me in different ways. It was a few years later that I came across his "On Writing" and decided I had to read it. It ended up sitting unread until I did start writing and decided I wanted to understand it more. It's definitely the book to read if you want to become a writer.

What I really wanted this post to say was:
Thank you Stephen King for inspiring me. You are currently my favourite author - I have several of your books that I could easily read over again, such as Christine and Misery. If it wasn't for you, I probably wouldn't have picked up the idea of writing again and actually want to take it seriously. I'm currently half way through your "On Writing" and I love it - so much I think it'll make me sad when it's over! You're amazing and I hope you continue to write.

Welcome! On Writing is probably my fave writing book. Why? I believe it's because it is essentially a memoir... about his writing. And if there is any genre I like best it is memoirs and biographies. You may also like another good writing book... Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird...similar, but I prefer King's book. Perhaps because I am a (bit) biased Mainer.) ;)

On Writing is the best book...er, on writing...that I've ever read. Very down-to-earth and practical, offering sound advice without becoming dictatorial. I learnt more from it than I did the couple of CW classes (one of which was Advanced Creative Writing) that I did as part of my degree. Simple as that.

I read some biography about Stephen King written by a lady and she said he refused to speak to her and was listening from another room while she spoke to someone.

Welcome Misery_Fan_07! I have wanted to write all of my life. I wrote between the ages of 12 to 19, the period when I really had nothing to say. Now, at 53, I have lots to say but neither the inspiration nor the inclination. Maybe when I retire and have more time I'll jump back on that horse. Good luck with your work! All the best, mal.
