Irony is...

In the movie Serpico a shady character is told to watch for anyone who might be a plainclothes cop, and told, "If you spot someone who's phony take off your glasses and wipe them."

I laughed, imagining the guy trying to see out of glasses which are only getting dirtier until he can't spot anything at all.

Well, there's a great illustration of irony found in O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi", a simple but very powerful short story. A poor young couple struggles to find a way to give each other a Christmas gift. He sells his watch to buy beautiful combs for her long hair, she sells her long hair to buy a chain for his watch. I read it when I was young and I've thought of it every holiday season since.

What I liked about the story the most is that it is not presented as tragedy. If I recall correctly when the two of them realize what they've done they are joyful in their realization of how much they love each another.

I don't just 'like' but love Danicus' post about the billboard on texting... I heard a texting psa recently which criticized everything from eating food to changing the radio station... I would think reading billboards about the evils of texting a distraction too in that context...

The ironic thing about that billboard though is that it gives the reader a number to text for more info.
