I quit getting flu shots because I would always get a respiratory infection (like bronchitis) after getting the shot. I'd read all the articles stating flu shots cannot make you sick so when I was in the hospital last year, I asked if I could get a flu shot. They discovered I was allergic to latex and they told me I could not get a flu shot because, although the serum doesn't contain latex, the application thingy does.

Latex allergies have become somewhat common in recent years but allergy tests in the 60's didn't include latex. If strawberries give you a rash, you're probably allergic to latex.

Although I'm disappointed I can't get flu shots, I'm glad to know why they made me sick. It wasn't my imagination afterall :)

This sounds like some of the shots would be safe for people with latex allergy. Worth talking to your doctor if you want to get it.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Got one last week. My doctor tricked me into getting an entire physical. I thought I was just coming in so he could get my prescriptions refilled. He told me this was the first physical I’ve had in my entire life. I said “Yeah, and the only reason I’m having it done now is because you tricked me into it.” He wasn’t all to thrilled when I told him I took on some extra part-time work on weekends at hardware store working inside and outside garden. He said I was crazy with my medical history and the toll it has taken on my body. I said if “I didn’t you’d be telling me to get some exercise. So I’m walking about 5 miles a day, twice a week, and lifting weights (bags of stone, block, topsoil, fence panels, snowblowers, grills and fireplaces, etc). And they pay me for it... So it’s better then going to a gym and handing them my money” He laughed and said that since I’m too pig-headed to listen to him, I had to at least get a flu shot and a tetanus shot.

Had my first one this year only because my daughter is insisting that until my granddaughter (due in November) is old enough to have her immunizations anyone coming in contact has to have a flu shot and be up-to-date with their DPaT. I have no intention of getting another one as I haven't had the flu in at least a decade, probably longer, and I'm not in a high risk situation.

Do they make you get Captain Trips shots in the office? :)

raw apple cider vinegar, a shot a day...that, or a chilled 4 oz glass of your own urine. cures what ails you. puts hair on your chest. conversation starter.

Got the flu shot and shingles vaccine a few weeks ago. The ad on TV about shingles gave me nightmares.
I HAD shingles!

February 2013 on (in) my left hip - it was very painful

I hope that never comes back again - I was under quite a bit of stress and my immune system was probably compromised at that time

Thanks for everybody contributing - I used to start more threads but just got lazy lately

....a simple inoculation like the flu shot really can be a complex mess...what with sensitivities and allergies, fear of needles, disease etc....but it is your OWN choice...I have helped give at this point, over 400 injections to our population at the prison-those that are considered at risk for issues without having it....and probably at least that many have AMA'ed....being a nurse, I myself don't get it, since it's not required, and simply because the germ puddle I splash through everyday keeps my immune system in pretty good shape...one other thing, I have never seen documented cases of GB from the vaccine but I know if you've had it-you are not to take the shot...
