I got my flu shot today. A flu shot does not cause you to get sick. I have to explain this to my students every year. The vaccine has either dead or inactivated viruses and cannot give you the flu or anything such as a respiratory sickness. You may have redness or swelling at the injection site, or muscle aches or low-grade fever, but these are not common.

If you think you get sick every time you get the shot, it's because humans tend to look for that kind of thing and notice it more readily. Respiratory illnesses are common around the time the flu shot is given; I had a sore throat all week. You may get sick after you get the shot simply because you contracted a virus, probably even before you got your shot, and the symptoms are now showing up.

Now I predict the chorus of, "I was never so sick as the year I got that darn flu shot. I will NEVER get it again!" Coincidence, or again, you were noticing every little sickness simply BECAUSE you got the shot.

Seriously, ask your medical doctor. The flu shot does not cause you to be sick!!!!!

Simple science.
I get one every year, so thank you for repeating this.

What kind of shots? Flu shots or vaccinations?

Up here it is the law that children and babies have to be vaccinated, if that is what you mean...
Any, I just don't understand people who don't vaccinate. It's law here too to be vaccinated and flu shots in order to attend public schools, but some people still don't get them because they think it'll give them autism or something.

I don't think it is the law that people HAVE to get flu shots - I can understand a law about vaccinations against major diseases for children but I do not think there is any law requiring people to get the flu shot.

When I was in the military a female sergeant of mine tried to order me to go to the Base Hospital to get a flu shot - I just looked at her like she was nuts. (this was around 1999 I think).

When it is your body and you get to decide what to do with it, then no one can force you to get a flu shot.

Yes - I understand the science behind it so I am not arguing against that. Just my personal opinion.

You bet I am. I just finished with a late-season flu and I want to have a defense against the winter ones. Because once a year is plenty!

BTW, you do not get the flu (or autism) from a vaccine. The virus in the vaccine is dead as a brick. Any minor symptoms* you feel are your body's defense system registering those particular viruses. Be safe, vaccinate!!!

* Unless you're allergic to eggs. In which case, talk to your doctor.

I still think you should get a flu shot regardless of personal beliefs, it's not going to hurt you.

Not the flu, but about a month ago I caught strep throat. Never had it in 45 years and I was out of town for a class when I caught it or I guess maybe I had already caught it and just wasn’t symptomatic on the drive down yet. I had NO idea strep made you that sick. I had an exam at the end of the week and I’m pretty sure about Wednesday of that week I died and came back as a zombie to finish the class. I could not believe how crappy strep makes you feel. My coworkers begged me to go a local medical clinic in Little Rock where we were but, nope, too stubborn, “I’ll be fine.” I was NOT fine...lol
I think I probably drank about a gallon of water every couple of hours and just kept burning it off. I caught merry hell from my wife on the phone and especially when I got back into town. She called it exactly right, told me it sounded like strep. “Nah, I’ve just got a bug, I’ll be fine.”.......Went to the med clinic on my way home after getting back to town Friday evening. The doc did a swab test and came back less than 5 minutes later. “You have a very bad case of strep and a fever of 102.5.”....I also drove us all back home from Little Rock...lol.
As soon as I got out out of my truck at home and staggered into the house with my Rx, I heard about it for the next couple of days, deservingly so. For anyone who has had strep, I get it now, point taken and appreciated. Blech!
