So do you think the house was haunted or bad luck for anyone who lived in it?
I'm not sure. Undecided. Did anyone catch the racism in the story. I only really noticed it because of a strange blip that happened in my area this past week. A high schooler here displayed a confederate flag at a football game when we played a rival with many African American players.

Agreed. I wonder if it was the 'disconnect' of her flat facial expression when she flashed him, the shock of seeing her pink parts, and his adolescent hormones and lust that seared him.

I absolutely think that the first few lovers have a huge impact on a person.
So I wonder what happened to those poor people who like to dress up in rubber suits and such?

Now that you mention it, I do remember. That is the way SK writes a lot of his old timers-even though it's stereotypical, it is true with a lot of people of that age. Who they're prejudiced against depends on the area and who the vast minority is. Of course stereotypes are made to be broken...

It is interesting how they mixed up 'the legal' and the 'mob'. Although, who knows, perhaps in those parts, the two were interconnected. I Do Know One Thing, This Story 'Grew On Me.'
LOL! I think in a lot of places they're more connected than we think! ;) It was interesting how I initially felt Joe(?) was gonna be the bad guy, but it turned out his wife was the evil one!

It wasn't blatant, but it was there. The Guys discuss 'the Heinies', the 'WOPs (With Out Papers- Italians),**** - Jew etc..,Interesting how that level of discussion so commonplace back then 'hits us' now.
I did not know the origin of WOP - my Mom came to Canada from Scotland and got automatic citizenship because in 1946 Canada was under the Queen (the Dominion of Canada).

But she did mention that other nationalities who immigrated here got the nickname DPs which stood for "displaced persons".

Have we finished our discussion for tonight?
I don't think I have anything else to comment on. I think next week's story (Chattery Teeth) is one to look forward to!

Thanks for hosting this little on-line discussion :peace:

You know what-I've seen "WOP" written so many times and I don't think I ever knew what it was short for either! :a11: Thanks VL!!

I think the main reason the guys didn't like Joe was because he didn't support their business. He was an upstanding citizen. Ran a mill, but he initially was a dick too 'firing Joe'.
