This was no boating accident.

It wasn't a propeller.

It wasn't any...coral reef.

It was a shark!

*****Shark Nerd Alert*****

The scientific names Hooper gives as possible suspects were longimanus (Oceanic Whitecap) and Isurus Paucus (Long-fin Mako). Both are kind of silly as neither of those species are common to coastal Massachusetts waters. The short-fin Mako would have made sense as they are common in NE waters. The whitetips are deepwater sharks. Common culprit in shipwrecks and plane crashes that happen in the open ocean. Very rarely found in shallower water. In fact, the whitetip was probably the species that killed most of the sailors in the USS Indianapolis disaster that Quint talks about in the movie.

My dad is a World War II Navy vet. We named one of our Belgians "Beaverbook's The Boson's Mate" (Sailor was his call name). Lastly, my dad taught me how to tread water like they trained him in the Navy: two fingers pointing up out of the water. I think it was meant to be an endurance exercise but I've always wondered about the USS Indianapolis; was this meant to detract sharks? How long before they became exhausted and terrified? I'm off for a swim with my toddler!

Pretty cool!

It's a good breakdown of the film craft behind the scene and an excellent analysis of how great Shaw was in the film.

Unfortunately, it does not tell you why this monologue is so scary. It's so scary because It's a true story!!

Shaw has some facts wrong (most importantly the date. Actual date was July 30th, 1945) but the delivery was killer.

An even scarier story is all of the background behind the sinking of the Indianapolis and the great lengths the Navy went through to cover up their botching of the rescue and how they actually court-martialed the ship's Captain. Absolutely inexcusable. Story for another day........

That does it. Have you seen the muffin man?
I just found out that a girl got killed here last week, and you knew it. You knew there was a shark out there, you Knew it was dangerous, you knew all of these things but you still let people go swimming anyway. And my boy is dead now and there's nothing you can do about it.

Yeah, sometimes you have to go in through the backdoor on that site. Try going to boston.com and doing a search for the story.

A great white has 'pinged' off of one of our coasts nearby. Needless to say, it will keep people out of the water.

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. -

According to data gathered from OCEARCH http://www.ocearch.org/, the 16 ft. great white shark Mary Lee has been located off of the coast of Ocean City and Assateague for the second time in the last couple weeks.
