Just over the years, I've heard jokes made about this one. I just always loved it.
That was the day my then boyfriend, now husband, got his driver's licence. The young woman giving him the driving test was bawling her eyes out, couldn't even tell him where to turn, nothing. Just made vague hand gestures.
He'd been scheduled to give 2 performances in Portland, Maine on Aug. 17th and 18th--the first ones of a new concert tour, so the anniversary of his passing is usually mentioned in connection with that around these parts.
It has been one of my favorites as it tells a story, albeit a true and dreadfully sad story.
In my world In The Ghetto will always be the best song Elvis did. He has made more more ,catchy perhaps, but for me Ghetto is the real deal.
Guitar Town is always my go-to Elvis Song, followed closely by High Heel Sneakers.
Also, Dwight Yoakam does a version of Suspicous Minds that burns the way that song is supposed to.

Wow. I like a lot of his stuff. Tough to pick a fave. King of the Whole Wide World comes to mind. I remember being in shock and cutting out the article in the next days newspaper. I still have that clipping in one of my photo albums. I liked Michael Scott's impression of him on 'The Office'. "Thank you. Thank you a lot!". I play a little guitar and do my own Elvis impression for the folks who ask. I keep some plasticene and an Elvis bobblehead in my guitar case and, when asked, I do an 'impression' of Elvis.
I always liked Hunka burning love.
Give me all the old Sun Records stuff, like Milk Cow Blues Boogie. Son, that's Rock and Roll. He was the King, always will be.

Anyhoo, I could talk ELVIS all night, but I'll let someone else take the podium. Just wanna recommend Peter Guralnick's EXCELLENT two part ELVIS bio--Last Train To Memphis and Careless Love. Lord have mercy, that's some GREAT reading, even if you don't dig the King.

My father-in-law has a Velvet Elvis hanging in his bar. We hand painted this on our bar in the karaoke room as part of our tribute to rock'n'roll.

...I was saddened when I heard the news, but in my formative years-which those were at the time-I really didn't appreciate the legacy of that young hunk of boy from Tupelo....that I learned later...I always enjoy the gentle humor of his films and his catalog of music is immense of course, but if I had to pare it down to one song:
I was only little when Elvis passed, but my husband and I are huge fans. I've only been to Graceland once, but it was a wonderful experience. I can't pick one favorite song but I tend to like the sad ones. In the Ghetto was always a favorite of mine, as well as Long Black Limousine and Green Green Grass of Home. But really so many more...even songs that weren't originally "his". His voice had a way to get inside your soul
I used to have one of these but my elderly aunt loved it so much I gave it to her. His hips sway.
