...this should do well, from a nostalgia and curiosity standpoint...it's obvious that sharks and especially Great White's haven't lost their fascination for folks-look at the ratings for any "Shark Week" on Discovery...and I loved the movie-never tire of it....the score is simple yet ominous, it has become ingrained into society...the acting was well done and thought the effects may appear dated now, they will still play on primal fears...I still jump every damn time that dead face pops up in the porthole....plus, it had some great lines-like "you're gonna need a bigger boat"...

I love Jaws, it's an almost perfect film--and it'd be cool to see it on the big screen for once, except that I've just seen it SO many times. They show it on DirectTV allatime, and I usually end up watching the damn thing. And with all the other cool flicks I have yet to see--nah, sorry shark.

Still, though, gotta say--great flick. Love it.

Great film! My personal all time favorite.

If you have never seen it on the big screen you should at least once. Not sure if this re-release is using a digital print or not. If so, I'd say skip it. If they are using a 35mm print, that's a different ball game. I saw a good 35mm print of this last year at the Coolidge Corner theater in Cambridge. It was awesome! Packed theater and people still screamed and jumped at the appropriate times.

It's playing there again Labor Day and I'll be there

My favorite line from Chief Brody is "I can do anything. I'm the chief of police!"

Movie was actually based on true events. Google Matewan Creek shark attacks for the details. Although, the shark responsible for those attacks was most likely a Bull Shark.

Also, Quints speech about the USS Indianapolis is haunting because it's true. Only incorrect thing in it were the dates. The incident occurred on July 30th, 1945, not June 29th. July 30th is an infamous and awesome date. Infamous for the Indianapolis tragedy. Awesome because it's my birthday!

I'll cut Robert Shaw a break though. He was tanked when they filmed the scene and passed out after so they couldn't re-shoot it!

Here's a link to the Coolidge Corner screening of the film on Labor Day. If you are in MA that weekend you should check it out! You might even catch a glimpse of your friendly neighborhood SwiftDog :0:

I would see it in the theater. I did when it first came out and it scared the crap out of me. Seriously. I think people seeing it for the fist time these days do not appreciate how real the special effects were back when it was made.
The movie scared me so much that upon entering my bedroom that night after seeing it with my friends, there was a MAD magazine on my night table and the cover was a parody of Jaws. You just know I had to bury it under my other comic books; I was that shaken up by the movie!

I saw it when it first came out and it scared the daylights out of me. That said I probably wouldn't go see it again. Someone here said if you haven't seen it on the big screen definitely should. Also CYB said some younger people might not appreciate it in the context of when it was made. Still scary as hell.

...if never seen, then do the big screen... As others have said, you'll be cheating yourself out of experiencing a pop culture touchstone...so what if the effects might seem hokey to the younger set, Bruce the shark carries the scares that prey on our primitive hindbrains...and no effect in the world will capitalize on that...

Great movie, great music. Both Spielberg and Williams had done their directing/music thing before (Williams more than Spielberg), but this one absolutely vaulted both of them to another level or three in moviedom. And for good reason. It was all masterfully done. Not many scores, you can just hum two notes, and it's immediately identifiable to the public at large.

I used to think the only real "that would never happen" part of the movie was at the end when the shark launches out of the water and lands on the Orca. Then I saw the Air Jaws documentary. I was all like "Daaaamnnnnn!!"

With the increased number of Great Whites off of Cape Cod it's only a matter of time before we have life imitate art. We already had one genius get bitten because he decided to go swimming near a seal colony.
