Finally finished The Fireman. I didn't love it as much as many of you did. I started out loving it, but it went on for too long and I never felt connected to any of the characters other than Renee. Don't get me wrong, I liked it a lot, but NOS4A2 is still my favorite of Joe's novels; The Fireman comes in second. I think my high hopes colored my reading of it.

I completely agree with you (I know, shocking, right?) ;;D

I have to say that I agree with the "NOS4A2 is better than The Fireman" comment.
I felt his work has got progressively better, but this (while still pretty damn good) wasn't quite as engaging as his last.

I have only been able to read about four chapters and then I have to set it down and go onto something else. It's just not grabbing me (yet).

I haven't even heard of that...
Very good little story. I think I liked it so much because of things that were going on in my life at the time. Not sure what I would think about it now, but I'm guessing I'd still like it.

This makes us a trio of dissenters. I'm probably even more of one because I didn't like it much at all.
Too many references to his dad's work took me out of the story every time. I know he's his son, but too much piggybacking caused me to dread each and every distraction. Saying one of the characters had forgotten the face of his father was too much, and then the Nozz-a-La? Come on. I have absolutely loved all of Joe's works, especially NOS4A2, but I couldn't wait to finish this one. How much longer could they have been on the road to the island? I figured there was no such paradise early on, and I'm never one to figure this stuff out. Just glad Martha Quinn wasn't in the sailboat at the end. I probably would've become my own Fireman and set the book ablaze. Anyway, I didn't care about any of the characters except the cat. None of the story had me feeling any emotion at all, and I was one who cried after finishing NOS4A2. Just sorely disappointed. Doc Creed, I think some Capote is in order.

I ditched it a week ago, too. Not bad, just...meh. You make a lot of good points. Capote is always on my reading playlist. I'm eager to hear your opinion.
