...humph...I found it quite engaging and got a chuckle out of all "dad" homages...but it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things...
True dat, GNT.
I guess getting a laugh from the homages spoiled the seriousness of the plot for me. Then the story didn't seem real, and that's what I want--for the story to engross me so much that I love and hate the characters, and feel their elation and sadness--but it never happened for me. I'm glad you liked it though!

I wonder why he did this? I was getting a few chucks in the beginning. But then.. too much for me.

It started off so well.

I could not get serious about the characters, I was waiting for a Mother Stuart to show up or something.

Maybe she did, I have not finished.

danie said it much better than I could.

EXACTLY!
Harold Cross? Yeesh.
He even referenced Christmasland from NOS4A2. To me, it was like he picked out as many dad references as possible, then built a story around them. Then when Roland showed up holding Oy in his arms, that was enough. JUST KIDDING. That did not happen, but wouldn't have been surprised if it did. :0:

I mean no disrespect. But boy, oh boy... Glad Oy did not show up in a stranger way.

I think there were a number of SK references in NOS4A2 as well and I even remember both Joe an SK talking about this in separate interviews before that book came out. Maybe this time around it bothered some of us because at this point it's a played out gimmick. I'm over the his whole genre of "meta" references and Easter eggs in works of fiction. To me it's a lazy way of getting a certain audience, but in this case it seems to have backfired with some of us.

But I so admired him for staying clear of his family, and making it on his own. (and still do)

I just wonder why he did this? I just imagine that he and Mr. King had a laugh?

Still a good book, till I could not take it.

Thank you snarky Joe Hill. :smile2:

Gosh, that's gotta be a fun family to hang around with.

The Fireman slipcases.

Anyone know if these are still getting made over at CD?

I am pretty sure I pre-ordered them, but now the page is not even listed on their website anymore. Strange.

WOW - what an incredible surprise I got just now. I got home and there was a package on my doorstep from Water Street Books. Water Street is the store that I ordered my signed copy of The Fireman from. I don't even remember this, but apparently the people that pre-ordered The Fireman were entered in a drawing for a book. I won a signed special edition copy of Locke and Key 3; Crown Of Shadows with a slipcase. It's signed by Joe and Gabriel and is one of 250 copies. This was totally unexpected as I don't even remember the part about a drawing when I ordered The Fireman.

It was the GD Mary Poppins references that did me in. By the end, I was rooting for everyone to die-especially the main character, whose name I forgot within minutes of finishing the book--but the actual Fireman. Meh. I've definitely read worse books, don't get me wrong, but this was just...pandering. Pandering and a boatload of meh.

My rankings, just for chucks:
1) HSB
2) the Kindle singles
3) 20th Century Ghosts
4) Locke and Key
5) NOS4A2
6) Horns
7) Fireman

So glad to hear you feel the same, momski! (Hey that's my new nickname for you.) Thought maybe it was just I wanting all those people to shut up and die already. I still can't really tell you why. I think the portable mother may have had something to do with it.

The only thing better than getting a limited edition book like that is getting a free book like that
