It's interesting to me how jury duty is so different from one place to the next. In Colorado, your employer is obligated to pay you up to $50 a day unless there is an agreement to pay more. After the first three days, the state pays the $50 a day. (If you are employed, otherwise, you have to work hard to get them to pay you anything.) Here, you are called to serve at least one day or one trial if you are chosen. If they don't need you or dismiss you the first day, you are done. And they can only summon you once a year. No one that I know has ever been summoned for more than one day. I have served on two juries. The last time I was summoned, I sent papers back to be excused. I am the caregiver for my disabled son, so I don't have to do jury duty anymore.

That doesn't sound fair.

My former employer just paid me my regular rate for the 3 1/2 weeks I was away. I also got to keep the paltry jury duty pay. Although, I was salaried and I was going in to the office for a few hours after the judge dismissed us for the day.
....considering my rate of pay, and what 8 hours is equivalent to....they can have the 20 bucks.....

Thanks everyone, for your replies. I really appreciate it.

I showed my boss the letter. He just said, 'It happens' and then told me about two others there that had to do it. So I got the inside info from them. Work pays full. Maybe I won't even be chosen.
But if I am - covered at work.

The court pays 5 bucks a day. whoos.

Geez your state is cheap! I got a whole $35 a day 6 years ago when I had to do it!

Hi Tet,

I need some advice, before the thread gets sullied..

I recieved a summons for Grand Jury Duty. It's for a term of one day a week for 18 weeks.
Need to get out of it, not only because I do not want to be in position to change someone's life, but can't miss anymore work. Any tips and stories will be welcomed.

And if anyone knows, Why the one day a week duty? How is this different than 'regular Jury duty'.

Helps.

This probably won't help, but the first thing waiting for me when I got home from the hospital last December was a jury duty summons. I burst out laughing. I was hospitalized for a severely fractured ankle and the courthouse has a huge flight of very steep steps just to get inside, and more to go up to the courtrooms! (There are elevators somewhere but whatever.) Then I heard back that if I didn't respond I'd be in some kind of trouble. I asked my doctor to take care of it. She wrote the court, and I received a letter excusing me from jury duty for life! My mom once got off due to having children at home under the age of ten, and my dad due to hearing trouble.

Aside from the much appreciated info from ghost19 seems that is not the case.
From what this guy told me at work, it is many cases - all felony ranging from shoplifting to murder and worse child pornagraphy. You don't have to see anyone but the lawyers - and then decide if it should to to trial with a whole different jury.

Kinda hoping I get chosen now. One day a week off of work for 18 weeks.. and doing my civic duty without actually seeing them, or their fate. Not up to me. I could not be in a jury where I saw the person.

Change of routine schedule.

Grand Juror. That's right. yip. :hopelessness:

While your position should be protected legally, I assume employers are not obligated to pay an employee when they are off work for jury duty, are they?
Yes - in my union we get some compensation if we have to serve on a jury.

I'm scheduled to go to the Law Courts on October 27th in the morning. If I get chosen trials that are scheduled for Selection Day are estimated to occur during the period of October 31st to November 29, 2016

Apparently according to our union agreement I shall receive leave of absence at my basic rate of pay, and will have to remit to my employer any payment received except reimbursement of expenses.

Of course not_nadine is down in the US and I am up in Canada

Your union agreement does not mean the law requires it.

I think being on a grand jury would be cool. Keep us posted on it, Nottie!
