Two things are certain: Kelly Braffet has extensive knowledge of the history of Heavy Metal, she is also a really talented writer.
Save Yourself is a good book that I enjoyed. Nothing more and nothing less. There are a couple of things that prevent me from calling this a ”great” book. First of all, I kind of lack an actual storyline. Braffet jumps from the perspectives of the lives of characters back and forth, nothing wrong with that, but it left me feeling unfocused, and the initial story lost some of its intensity. It felt as though the author tried to cram to much into one novel.
Also, I don't really understand how this book has been described as a thriller. Yes, parts of the book are certainly exciting, but more than anything this is a book about relationships. Between parents and children, lovers, and siblings. That, and the seemingly perpetual struggle of trying to find oneself a place and a sense of belonging in the world which we live.
To sum up, I truly did enjoy reading Save Yourself, but was at the same time left with a feeling that it could have been even better with a bit more focus and a sharper storyline.
