...Hiya everybody, it be I-your friendly neighborhood Village Idiot bringing you good tidings of great joy, free encyclopedias and blah, yadda, blah.....anyway, now that the "official" death knell of the Summer season-Labor Day has passed(and yes, I'm still wearing white...briefs that is)and kidlets have returned to school...I figured this would be a good time to roll out the plans for the upcoming King Kon...most of the older members here are aware, that during the Mansfield, Ohio Kon in 2014-a lengthy discussion was held amongst attendees, a vote taken and the choice made to shuffle off to Colorado for King Kon 2016. The every other year concept was floated by yours truly, and I think accepted well-to hold Kon's this way, so as to allow those that would like to join us to have time to plan and save up.
Having said that, I was pretty well exhausted from trying to make the 2014 Kon a good one, since Ohio is my home turf-but life intervenes for all of us, and the clock kept ticking without anything happening on the planning front 2016 wise-so by default-here I am again, trying to run the Titanic past the iceberg this time. With help from Blunty and IMMENSE aid & succor behind the scenes from HipMamaJen, I came up with a plan.
I chose to set everything up myself and I bear full responsibility for same. Frank and Jen have simply been there to be outstanding helpers, and nothing disagreeable or sour should be directed toward them. This "dictatorship" may not set well with some of you, and if so-so be it. The whole group discussion for the last two Kon's became very unwieldy at times and nigh on impossible in some situations as Frank and I can both attest. So, with Jen's miraculous mind and my mule-headedness, this is what I have laid out, and those that wish to join us are warmly welcomed and those that don't care for what I have hatched, no hard feelings,
King Kon 2016 will take place July 21st to the 24th. Plans are to get a tour Friday through the infamous Stanley Hotel(The Shining o'coss) and also on Saturday visit Boulder, where much of the latter part of The Stand took place. Other activities will be on our own, Jen says there are many shops and other neat places to go and we will have another group meal as well. Accommodations that seem appropriate in area and most budgets are listed below, and booking rooms should begin as soon as you're able:
-Alpine Trail Ridge Inn in Estes Park
800-233-5023
-Boulder University Inn
303-417-1700
-Boulder Twin Lakes Inn
303-530-2939
...look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it...the first two have given me memories and friendships that will live forever....

I only want to whisper gently that a few years ago, The Stanley was happy to extend group rates to King fans for a fan-con. The rates they quoted at the time were comparable (as a group) to the joints you'll find in town. If we wanted to put something together at the Overlook itself, it's do-able. If people want.

I'm totally fine if someone wants to step up to the plate and make that happen. A word of caution, the Stanley has no A/C and is HOT inside. I've set up group tours there on snowy winter days and had people end up sweaty and miserable.

So, while looking for hotels for a group in July, as much as the Stanley would be the perfect destination in a perfect world, I thought it probably would be better just to tour and then leave it behind to get some respite from the heat.

....those rates have become crazy expensive of late, and the menu, though quite good-is also not attainable for most average folks budgets....it was looked into...

First I'd like to shout out a big big Thank You to Scott for taking over the project of the King Kon for 2016, and shout out thank you's to Blunty and Jen. I can only imagine the work that was put into this project.

I never say never, but at present I know I could not attend. Thus, I am wishing all well that do make this journey. I've felt a part of each past Kon via the pictures and reports that were shared on the SKMB, and hope this will be done again.

Safe planning, travels and enjoyment for all. Way to go SKMB King Kon 2016.

Afterthought: will there be Tee shirts again?

I cannot imagine a hotel without central air - cuh-razy!

No a/c? Seriously? The notion suddenly becomes less attractive...

What about another central location, then? I saw some names bandied about, but is there one that might serve best as the one where people stay, so that late-night visits and/or spontaneous moments don't leave anybody out because they're at a different locale?

Yeah, no A/C. It was opened in 1909, and to retrofit the place would ruin it as a historical landmark. The rooms are beautiful, but mostly small compared to today's rooms (and beds!), so I think adding any kind of vent work inside the walls would just make them all even smaller.
