I brought this up to hubby last night. I was waiting to see the Frontier Days lineup, since that is kind of "our thing" to do in the summer, just the two of us, and it is the same week as the Kon. No one either of us really wants to see this year, though.

He says we can go! Hopefully everything with work doesn't continue in a downward spiral and we actually can make it.

I am pretty excited. :D And nervous. But mostly excited.
...outfreakinstanding!.....

I keep hoping our friends across the water will have some little get together, a luncheon or something just to meet each other. Take pictures. Of course, now with all the unrest, this is a little horror story all its own.
...I know, I would love for this to get an International flavor-but I can't say "get together" anymore without cringing....

I'm an hour and maybe a little change (1 hour 3 minutes, 40.1 miles, according to Google Maps) from Estes Park. We have a guest room for a couple. Another guest room for a single. Another couch (it's theoretically a pull-out, but I have to check - the grandkids might have wiped that out). If need be, an extra double bunk bed. We can cope for those who have to work on a budget.

It's my stomping grounds. Unless I'm in assignment out of state, I'll be there - and I'll do my best to make sure I don't have an assignment out of state. I can say I'll take myself off the calendar, but if good-paying work comes up for a faithful if demanding client... well, that's how it goes. But I'll try, I'll really try.

I've been to the Stanley, attended seminars there, taken pictures, but never stayed there. Grandma and I have stayed at a B&B in Estes Park, and I've been to a couple events at the local Holiday Inn there, which is a very nice place. However, be aware that Estes Park is a tourist town, not a ski town, and summer is the tourist explosion. I'm doubtful that you guys could get extra special rates now without some special pull, because those rooms fill up.

For those interested in hiking and nature and stuff, Estes Park is the front door to Rocky Mountain National Park and its magnificent scenery.

Kurben, Fort Collins is about an hour from the Stanley. I'm well acquainted with that great midsized town. It's also the Napa Valley of microbrews.

For lodging outside of Estes Park, you have Boulder to the south, Longmont to the southeast, Loveland to the east, and Fort Collins to the northeast. It's along the I-25 corridor, I-25 being Colorado's Main Street. I would say all those towns are roughly equidistant to a Stanley tour, with Loveland and Longmont probably being the closer, but don't take my word for it. Maps abound.

We have a minivan to haul grandkids around in. Assuming I can make it there, and let's call that about an 85% probability, I'm happy to haul up to six adults around. If you wanted to experience the Little Red Beast, it's just a four-seater, sorry.

It's too early to get excited, and I'm not the excitable kind, but.... well, I'm excited. See my avatar? That's my excited face.

What a beautiful picture. Amazing....

Has anyone made reservations yet? Where are people staying? I mean, what city, and if known, what hotel? We might rent a house, having the 2 kids along, and I have a friend in Colorado Springs so we may be in Colorado several days in advance of the Kon too. We're excited already and it's like 7 months from now!

This is from the original post by Scott and the dates are set in stone.
Scott and his wife will be at the Boulder Twin Lake Inn from the 17th thru 24th.
It is awesome that you will be there!

King Kon 2016 will take place July 21st to the 24th.Plans are to get a tour Friday through the infamous Stanley Hotel(The Shiningo'coss) and also on Saturday visit Boulder, where much of the latter part of The Stand took place. Other activities will be on our own, Jen(hip mama) says there are many shops and other neat places to go and we will have another group meal as well. Accommodations that seem appropriate in area and most budgets are listed below, and booking rooms should begin as soon as you're able:

-Alpine Trail Ridge Inn in Estes Park
800-233-5023
-Boulder University Inn
303-417-1700
-Boulder Twin Lakes Inn
303-530-2939

Remember it will be summer and the Stanley has no AC in rooms.

....I think Tracy and I are going to hang with Deb913 for a couple of days before the Kon, and then we've booked rooms at the Boulder Twin Lakes Inn...

I wanted to stay at the Stanley but I am not sure we can afford it, what with air fare, car rental etc.

We may book a room at the hotel where Scott and Tracy are staying, if there are any rooms left. Apparently it is not too far from the actual Stanley.

I just booked our room!! Whoo-hoo!!

:applause:

....YAY!!!!!!!!!.......

Hey - just booked a room at the Twin Lakes Inn Boulder for five days - arriving Thursday the 21st of July and departing on Tuesday morning July 25th :thumbs_up:

- I may not be able to do a lot of math (i.e. cannot add up to 19!):biggrin-new: but I can at least figure out that by staying there we are spending less than if we booked a room at the Stanley :grinning::star:

I would not mind staying there (even without any air conditioning) but we just cannot afford that at the moment on our budget.
