Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Definitely the weakest of the movies--I thought it was laughable when I saw it as a teen. I think I liked it better this time, especially the last little bit (the only part, I understand, that Miller actually directed). It suffered from a surfeit of the '80s: saxophones, mullets, huge shoulder pads, pro wrestling moves, and Wheel of Fortune references (lol). And the soundtrack was MILES less interesting than those by Brian May in all of the other movies. Pretty meh (before the train race and explosions started).

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond - a bit muddled, but a star turn from 12 year old Raffey Cassidy
San Andreas - seen it all before, but fun, and Alexandra Daddario is definitely gifted in the frontage dept.
Poltergeist 3D - OK, but why bother? The original was fine. And why 3D if you're not going to do anything with it?

Electrik Children (2012) Julia Garner, Liam Aiken, Rory Culkin, Billy Zane

I love a good weird movie and this one is certainly that. A girl who is living with her very fundamental religious family in Utah, thinks she has been impregnated by listening to music on a cassette and travels to Las Vegas to find the singer on the tape (who she thinks is the father of her baby). I know this sounds very strange but trust me, this movie is very good. Rory Culkin turns in another excellent performance and has proven himself to be the most talented Culkin. I've seen him give good performances in several of these small, quirky independent movies (like Lymelife). The cast is great, the story is original and the movie is well made. Available for streaming on Netflix.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)--WOW. This movie was absolutely insane and I loved every minute. So wild. Definitely one of the best action films I've seen in years.

The Drop (2014)-Well done crime thriller that's about a bartender (Tom Hardy) and his boss (James Gandolfini) who run a bar that is used as a 'drop' for smuggling dirty money to local gangsters. Great performances by Hardy and Gandolfini.

I watched John Frankenheimer's Year of the Gun, a political thriller set in 1978 Rome starring Andrew McCarthy (yes, that one) and Sharon Stone. Frankenheimer's career as a director definitely had its peaks (Seconds, Ronin, The Manchurian Candidate, Seven Days in May, French Connection II) and valleys (The Island of Dr. Moreau, Reindeer Games, Prophecy); sadly, this film was among the latter. It was a thriller without suspense, focusing on characters I didn't care about in a plot I could barely follow. A disappointment.

All The Pretty Horses (2000) Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, Henry Thomas

This was intended to be a gigantic epic of a film and was originally over 3 hours long but the studio execs forced it to be cut to 2 hours. Still, I think it's very good but you can tell it has been gutted. At the center of the movie is the forbidden romance between the Damon and Cruz characters but that's only part of the movie. It's a fine adventure film as well and it's also about the friendship between the Matt Damon and Henry Thomas characters. If the cut footage still exists, a new blu-ray edition would be nice. I would love to see it the way it was intended to be shown.

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio is based on the true story of housewife Evelyn Ryan, who helped support her husband and ten children by winning jingle-writing contests.
I enjoyed the movie although emotions ran from happy to sad tears, anger and frustration. Definitely recommend it. 3/5
